Post by: Pete on December 25, 2010, 21:15:50 PM
little birdie told me you can get a BB hooked up with Exchange via OWA without needing BES or anything.

Confirm/Deny?

via blackberry internet service, but - and they are BIG

- email is only polled every 15 minutes and then again 3 minutes later if a new mail is found

- NO CALENDAR (Biggest problem by far and away)

- No proper sync between read/unread/sent items

- No device control - so in effect, you might as well use a sh*tty smartphone with a poor search feature

As mark says there.  Its pointless, though you can tweak it a little if you unlock the engineering screens (trivial exercise).  Still worth paying the £5 a month though if youre actually wanting a Blackberry.

Or for people who dont keep every single email in the world on their phone, a perfectly good smartphone.
Searching for stuff on my phone is hardly laborious.  Hit the search button at the bottom, type what you want an it will look through all my email accounts, the internet, my applications etc until it finds what I need.
It cant be any simpler, as its a touchscreen phone.

You need to get over this BB is the best in the world, as its really not.  Its a good option, but no phone is the universal best for everyone.

sorry, wasnt really firing before.

Yeah, BIS Service is £5 a month.  Though it isnt as restrictive as Mark seems to think.  Calendar is fine etc, and you can set it up to Sync properly with Google Calendar etc.

Im still thinking that Blackberry is the best overall balance of usability, security and reliability.  BIS can be a little annoying when youre setting it up, but once its working its great.  Beats the crap out of any Android sh*t ive had the misfortune to play with.

OK, search for an email from a specific person, with a specific word in it, and an attachment of less than 5k. And it needs to be an email that was encrypted

BB is not the best in the world by far, its best for email, that its designed for.

Calendar isnt fine though, it doesnt sync with your outlook calendar properly, and doesnt sync contacts properly. No idea why they did that tbh

works fine for me on the desktop.  One of the guys at work uses his with Google Sync and NEVER plugs it in, and that works fine.  Well enough that he pulled the plug on is BES Express.

Ah right, I was on about OTA sync. Dont use the desktop redirect myself.

the google sync app works ok, though to get the full benefit out of it you need to add the Outlook Calendar etc in as well.  Mate gave up with his BESex as he had no real use for it as it was only for him and his wife.  Personally I thing Google have quite enough of my data anyway!

.....and the service will fall over if for any reason the BES servers cannot contact your exchange every 15 minutes.  Which leads to you reauthenticating every single BIS account.
