pretty much, there are more people supporting HD-DVD, which means though the costs are the same now its more likely the prices will fall faster.
My first cdr drive was a 8 speed reader, a 2 speed writer, and cost just over Ã,£450..... blank cds were Ã,£10 each too :o
was a loooong time ago ;)
Ive seen it cheaper. Ã,£574 inc VAT.
The website design is horrid. It doesnt work in my Firefox and is very slow in IE.

By next year they will be Ã,£50 and the people who bought early will look sick as a parrot. The first DVD writer was similarly priced, as was the Phillips video recorder (Ã,£750).
:stupid: Agreed.
joke of the day.....

lol :) crazy. absolutely crazy. Thing is I think HD-DVD and BluRay will be the new +R -R crap. Theyll both exist, and at some point manufacturers will manage to include each others technology in the other.
Can we expect to see dual format bluray and HD-DVD writers like we have dual format DVD+R and -R writers? Or is the format wat going to prevent that too.
Quite looking forward to these capacity of disks, will make backing up much more practical.
i nearly bought one then bottled it, as last time i bought a Panasonic DVDRAM drive when they first came out thinking it was the thing to have over the purchase of a Yamaha SCSI CDRW. Ã,£550 quid down the toilet!
Ive never paid > Ã,£40 for an optical drive, and I wont start by buying something like this now, especially as its a Sony thing, Blu-Ray.
(Im biased against sony due to their proprietary everything - once you get sony X, you have to buy sony Y and Z to connect it to  vendor lock-in, no thanks..)
:edit:
oops I just remembered I paid Ã,£70 for my DVD RW drive as half-life 2 arrived the day it came out and I just *HAD* to get a DVD drive to install it *THAT NIGHT* from PC World, and I was robbed...
an exception, I must say :P
Snellgrove you remind me of my early purchasing habits before the weight of the world crushed my wallet.
Anyone that buys something like this now has far more money than sense. Or small willy syndrome, since its probably the new technological must have.

Absolutely my compy doesnt even have a DVD-R... how out of touch am i!? :P
Most people dont need a DVD writer, its just something that comes with their compy and looks nice on paper. A DVD reader though is useful even if you just use it to watch films.
I think I have a couple of games on DVD too :/
I remember the days when the top notch DVD burners drives that had just come out were Ã,£300 odd. Give it a year and will be under Ã,£100.
