I would give up on one source m8, silly been looking at myself and one source will say its one way and then the other.

End of the day only real testimant is when they are properly main stream market and joe blogs buys them

The biggest headache would be Blu-Ray wins the battle in America, but HD-DVD wins in Europe.

Id personally like Blu-Ray to win because I can then go & buy a PS3 knowing i havent been flogged a dead horse. - one of the Wiis biggest mistakes imo is that its limted itself to wii discs only & wont play dvds.

More movie studios back blu-ray than hd-dvd.

HD-DVD should take its biggest selling point of being cheaper & aim it at the computer market imo.


There again, next month therell be a new set of figures from a different source saying HD-DVD is outselling by about 5:1. Anyone can take figures & massage them into whatever they want them to be.

Do not think that late but not till at least next year

Still cant see blue-ray being the choice in terms of burning though, pc wise when it finally moves and cost etc I just see hd being the choice and sad and funny say but probably true dvd copy folk would make a big chunk of which wins.

It took DVD a good 5 or 6 years to become affordable for the mainstream & not a specialised unit.

This is only true in America, here in Europe there is more support for HD-DVD and some movies that are Blu-ray exclusive in the US are HD-DVD exclusive here.

But there still lacks a lot of channels really and the bbcs version of HD seems the same as the its version of high quality digital radio, not bad but not as good as everyone elses, read a number of articles on how the bbc seems to differ with poorer quality then what everyone else uses.

You do have to take the BBC article with a pinch of salt.  Block buster will continue to do HD-DVD in the 250 stores which currently run HD-DVD rental.  Also, the BBC continues to refer to Bluray as as Bluray DVD...

This story made me laugh, they refer to Bluray as DVD and claim the DVD market is "slowing".  My arse.  I say story, but I use it in the vaguest possible sense.

At the moment I will choose Bluray over HD-DVD if they are the same price and region free so I can get 1:1 pixel mapping on my HDTV.  VGA has 2% overscan so it is slightly stretched.  

I believe the one film studio that was HD-DVD has announced that they will be doing Bluray as well.  Either way, if you have both formats then you are going to get the best version of the movie.  If you are going to pick one, you should pick the one which has available the movies that you want to watch.

The problem I forsee is that the slow take up of both bluray and hd-dvd will mean that the market for them will still be considerably smaller than the DVD market.  Movie companies want to move to the new formats because of the new copy protection to prevent piracy (short lived...).  I dont see DVD leaving us for a long time.  Its cheap, Cheap, CHEAP.  I cant help but think the HD formats will be for the enthusiast for quite a long time.

Thing is a number of the film companies Bluray only will start shipping HDdvd versions as well

I think Universal are HD-DVD Only & Disney Blu-Ray Only
The rest are cross platform.
I wouldnt be suprised if we start to see dual sided discs. Blu-Ray on oneside & HD-DVD the other.

Just have a quick gam at what format(s) Hot Fuzz will be coming out on and which film studio.

Disney just announced Snow White will be coming to Bluray in 2008.  

Also, http://www.tvpredictions.com/bluray062007.htm I think it would be interesting to see how many of the PS3s are used for playing bluray movies.  I bet the vast majority are used for Games.  The HD-DVD addon for the 360 is solely for movies.  It is artificially inflating the figures towards Bluray which is exactly what Sony wanted.

I really look forward to the day when physical distribution via disks is no longer mainstream

Stream or download all your content, stored in one box locally or when ever you need it from your supplier, whether its games, music, tv, movies, software etc.

We really need to dig all that copper out.
