You musta got some books for Christmas, this year I requested books instead of clothes;
Wolves of the Calla - Steven King
K I got this a few weeks back but I aint finished it yet. It starts off really well but then he goes into like 500 pages of backstory. The only thing thats keeping me going is the hints of metafiction, Im kinda hoping its further developed but the backstory.. ugh. Is this the same guy who wrote Wizard & Glass? He needs to get back on the drugs or something.
48 - James Herbert
I think this guy wrote The Fog - I read it when I was a kid and all I remember is a crazy gay orgy in a school gym. 48 starts off ok, but then he gets all clever - his writing sucks and he clearly points it out; like theres a guy escaping (killer nazis?) and he has time to admire all the architecture and stuff, and hes like I had time to marvel at all this sh*t the other day, luckily I can waffle on about it now whilst I escape all these murdering nazi bastards, I was worried that Id never get the chance to tell you about it. Hey I nearly died just now and there are still 4 guys pointing guns at me, but look! Check out the oil paintings and marble pillars!
MAYDAY - Nelson Demille & Thomas Block
Something about a supersonic passenger jet (not Concorde) and a fighter pilot doing a test firing of a long range missile mixing up the jet with a target drone at 62,000 feet. Puh-lease.. but it is a little gory so Im still reading :)
Expedition to Earth - Arthur C. Clarke
K, hes the daddy. Its not the best of short story collections but theres charm and depth to each one. Theres one called Superiority where they spend so long developing superweapons that they get their arses kicked by guys with "obselete" weapons & tactics.
First Class Killing - Lynne Heitman
The blurb on the back sounds kinda dirty, the stewardesses serve "more than just complimentary drinks" - ooh-eer. I definitely wanna read this one. Murder and sex and stuff - cool.
The Traveller - John Twelve Hawks
1984 + The Matrix + Da Vinci Code = Possibly good, only read the prelude so far.
Oku no Hosomichi - Matsuo Basho
Great bit of classical Japanese Poetry. :)
Pushing Ice - Alastair Reynolds
Exploring the futility of human existence when compared with the vastness of time. Joy! :P
