It is funny I have seen both trailers
Throw the Jew down the well!
"... so my country can be free."

or the one about his hosts wife "that one not so good"
But wwwhhhhyyyyyyy......... :D
"she is my sister" :D
Saw it on Saturday with a lame crowd. Ill just repost my Usenet critique, which was in response to an American pundit whom panned it:
Quote from: meTalk about grasping at straws! An entire article about the "Elitist
Sneer" in a film. Talk about not "getting it", he might as well have
unclasped the left hinge of his skull, opened the cavity, and pointed
proudly to what looks suspiciously like a Diamond brand walnut.
I saw it on Saturday, and Im glad I got no popcorn or soda, as the
audience in front of me would have become soiled. I just about rolled
in the aisle when he saw cockroaches, then accused his Jewish hosts of
"shapeshifting" while throwing dollar bills at the bugs. I cringed when
the man at the rodeo suggested he shave his moustache so he looks "more
Italian, and less terrorist".
Whats the deal, did David Brooks see a different film? It had nothing
to do with elitism. I saw a lot of great American qualities being
celebrated in the film. How about the southern belle, whom upon being
proffered a bag of Borats feces, doesnt scream or recoil, but calmly
explains how to use a western style toilet. Or the youth in Atlanta who
seem to genuinely want to help this "foreigner" be a bit hip. Even the
uncomfortable driving instructor showed a great American desire to
accept folks, despite discomfort at being kissed.
What the film did was simply to shove the shadowy parts of the human
psyche into the light so that we may laugh and cringe at them. Its
humor on a heroic and brave scale. Too bad a lot of people on both the
PC left, and reactionary right just dont get it. Those of us in the
middle that still have the ability to laugh, should bring a spare pair
of underwear to the theater.

Sense of humour failure chap?
I dont agree with Serious on very much but I have to on this.
Borat is the least funny thing Ive seen since Bo Selecta. The original Ali-G wasnt funny either.
Some folks have an inability to process humor.
For me it works on several different levels, in a painfully funny way. I love Andy Kaufman as well. Go figure.
"We make sex crime...HIGH FIVE!"
it wasnt paritcularly good IMO.
The original Borat concept was sneaky satirical humour, this was just 18-21 yr old level slap stick/shock humour, all the younger people in thcringe humoure cinema were urinating themselves, but to me it was just cringed-based humour ...
disappointed, to be honest.
I didnt cringe one bit at the film, as it was brilliant social satire. OK, two hairy men wrestling over a jack off picture isnt satire, its the realm of dadaist philosophy! :ptu: :D You get to see nurture vs. nature. Its great. Like the frat boys that spew misogynistic memes left and right, really just like empty words, words that make them part of a certain tribe, but when it comes to compassion, consoling Borat over the fact that Pam Anderson not being a virgin, theyre quite genuinely affected by his sadness. Thats the genius of it. He shows the inherent good in people, and the ignorance thats pervasive from a cowpoke associating a moustache with Islam, and feminists not understanding an outrageous joke. :D
"Give me a smile, baby...why angry face?"
Quote from: maximusotterI didnt cringe one bit at the film, as it was brilliant social satire.
maybe in the states; it was lo-grade social satire if you want to put it into the class of social satire, its been done to death over here and it just didnt flickt the switch for me.
Anyone who loved it may want to see the Aristocrats on film 4 about 12:45 TONIGHT (definitely on freeview and AFAIK Sky too). Its entirely about the well known joke that I wont put up here cause I would get lynched by the rest of the Mods...

The Aristocracts is well worth watching. Its like high concept jazz, but with family members and Vaseline. :D
Sarah Silvermans sweet take on the bit, complete with a retarded brother, is essential!
How is a room full of evangelical streaker-impersonators straight up wanting to save his soul not funny? Its funny because they care, and also because theyre fairly mental.
(On a related note, in the religious gathering scene, where the guys keep running across the front of the alter/stage, I was waiting for some English Football Steward to terry-tate them, wouldve been genius  )

Oh Dear, that scene wasnt revealed in any trailers or reviews. I live around those kinda folks (well, theyre a few miles away in the burbs) so it hit close to home. I had tears of hysteria running down my face with that scene. Yes, theyre sincere, well the congregation is, and most of the clergy are song and dance men, and with their acting, and Sacha Cohens additional acting--it was like a comedy orgasm. People were shreiking in the theater. :D
Hmm, yeah, apologies for the spoiler for anyone who hasnt seen it :/
The "Christian reviews" are great, btw. This site calls it "ABHORRENT" and promoting humanism!

Interestingly, the Good Christian Folk at another goody goody review site totally got it:

High Five!
Oh and to those saying it was a teen cringe fest, I was out with all over 25s ;)
We all found it very funny.
High five!
I noticed there quite a few people in there 30s, 40s at least when I saw it wednesday. They were quite enjoying themselves. The film is hillarious and a good way to spend your evening if you have no other plans.

yeah, ya old fogie !
Im pretty amazed at the number of winger pundits that just dont get it, including the always out-of-touch Mr. Krauthammer:
Quote from: the krautmanYet, amid this gathering darkness, an alarming number of liberal Jews are seized with the notion that the real threat lurks deep in the hearts of American Protestants, most specifically Southern evangelicals. Some fear that their children are going to be converted; others, that below the surface lies a pogrom waiting to happen; still others, that the evangelicals will take power in Washington and enact their own sharia law.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/11/23/AR2006112300966.htmlWell, over 30 states used an evangelical push over the past few years to enact legislation descriminating against homosexuals. Right wing christians bomb and kill people at abortion clinics, debate on the morality of stem cell research, which creating embryos of their own that get killed, and are still claiming that global warming is a "liberal lie". Sounds like a group to be reckoned with.
The chat boards in my city, which claims to be the "belt buckle of the bible belt", is
clogged with hatred of women, black people, jews, and gays, all the while quoting willy nilly from the Bible.
So I dont know what elitist planet Amerika Krauthammer lives on, but the humor in the film lays in exposing some very uncomfortable truths.
The problem with a lot of these neocon northeast urban pundits in America is that they dont realize that there really is a quite dark movement of repression thats ready to take power given the chance. You can live in NYC, or Philly, or SF and laugh it off, but its very real.
So Cohen does a great job of not only having some slapstick fun, but exposing a very dark underbelly, which really has no excuses for itself. Thats the best kind of comedy.
