Fixed profile?
You pulled the ringer wire out of your BT socket?
Profile isnt fixed.
Ringer long-gone.
Every single possible fix known to man, tried and tested. No joy.
Its likely the line distance (8km) but surely the line quality would be in sh*te order too?
:/
Fair enough, profile looked like a fixed 512/384 Ive seen with other ISPs! Never seen the point, personally Id sooner have a higher download at that point though!
Your copper quality may be awesome, but the distance will just kill it. Ping tests arent the best way to test line quality anyway. They dont measure enough different metrics.
If I was you Id be looking at the chances of BT Infinity hitting your area. Im off to a little village near Leighton Buzzard this weekend, and Ive been asked to try and make my mother-in-laws broadband work better as shes been having similar sh*t speed issues!
The entire Internet has been fubar since the World Cup kicked off. I swear to God the infrastructure that most ISPs have in place at the moment mustve come straight out of 1970.
Both my VM and O2 are completely borked atm and they get worse when people start streaming the WC matches.
Is there any way to boost the line somehow?
I also heard of someone tapping into some kind of grey box outside?

depending on your ISP and router you may be able to adjust your target SNR from the router end, some ISPs allow that. However with it basically being BT I doubt it!
I dont think PN have suggested that (or allow it). Just grips me that Im paying £19 a month for 0.4Mb...
If youve got a netgear, get the relevant DGTeam firmware and tweak away. Ive gone from 1.4mb to 4mb, and look at my stats below.
Whats your line length, though?
My router is a Belkin N Wireless - any tips for tweakage?
:)
So Im now using a 3G dongle and its still arse.
Browsing is fine, speedtest.net indicates between 2 and 3Mb/s on a sustained download but when I try to download game updates all I get is 5Kb/s... :(
Is a port blocked or something?
:disappointed:
Any ideas? :)
Not sure about actual length, but Im about 4.4k from the exchange as the crow flies. Knowing the area though, I can tell you that its entirely too far.
Looks like the poo speeds on 3G is just peak time crapness. 0100hrs and Im getting 5.3Mb :nana:

Haha congratulations mate, welcome to 2011!
I'm jealous, I can't even stream iPlayer smoothly sometimes! Good stuff
Don't actually try and use any of that lovely bandwidth, or they'll cap you faster than you can say UFUP.

lol, sounds just like Virgin to me.
QuoteCustomers with Broadband size: 100 (100Mb) – your usage excluding file sharing traffic (see below) is unaffected.
Customers with Broadband size: XXL (50Mb) – your downstream usage excluding file sharing traffic (see below) remains unaffected and we'll soon be increasing your upload speeds from 1.5Mb to 5Mb. However during peak times we'll need to slow you back to 1.75Mb if your upload usage is particularly high.
Customers with Broadband size: XL / L / M – during peak times, we moderate the speeds of the very small proportion of customers who are downloading and/or uploading an unusually high amount. Where we improve upload speeds, we'll also be adjusting our traffic management in the upgraded areas so everyone can get a fair share.
File sharing
At peak times we also slow down the speed of file sharing traffic – that's services like Limewire, Gnutella, BitTorrent and Newsgroup (Usenet) traffic. You will, of course, still be able to use these services, but downloads and uploads will take longer during these peak periods. See our full Traffic Management Policy here.
Lol, Now I remember why I steer clear of Virgin., Top whack prices and rock bottom service.
The 100MB service a few months back was immense, now it's a bit meh, they throttle usenet traffic 5-12pm and it's slow as sheet.
I'm on 30Meg and get no issues, occasionally they throttle if we have been downloading a LOT, but it's never that slow even when throttled and to be honest, when I'm getting 30 Meg, I'm getting 30 Meg, there are very few providers that will give me that!

I'm forever getting throttled on 30mb connection. I can download 10gb @ 3.8Mb/s then my connection drops dead (300kb/s) for 4 hours. Infuriating because it means it takes about6 hours to get a full 12gb 1080p film
The sales wuman specifically stated to me before I placed the order that they don't throttle. Whether that's true or not, if they try that stunt I'll simply throttle their payments. Calls are recorded for training purposes.
I have a 5Mb/s MyFi I can lean on until we slug it out. ;)
Still, I won't be downloading all that much - 50Mb/s is more of an insurance policy but, damn, it's a breath of fresh air compared to sh*tband.
Any chance we can make the default font face Verdana?
I'm also on 30meg I don't think Virgin are that bad tbh been with them for about 3 years now don't have many complaints at all, only one that stands out was earlier this year for a week or so when everything was throttled 24/7 down to 1meg which was very annoying!
I tend to do all my downloading in the early hours or during the day it was a habit I got into when I was with an ISP before Virgin that had peak time caps, so I have never had any issues with throttling with Virgin and near enough always get the max speed of my line.

Calls aren't blanket recorded. Only if you start kicking off the supervisor will record the call.
They DO throttle, try and withold payments and they'll refer you back to their T&C's which you should have read.
dunno about virgin adsl, but virgin cable do throttle. been with virgin for years & they cut you back about 75% during peak hours.
at least thats what newsbin shows me
75% of 50Mb. That's me f*cked then - I'll 'only' have 12.5Mb/s WOOHOO!!! :nana: :P
ALL virgin accounts are throttled for usenet 5-12pm and most of the time on weekends regardless of if you're on 100MB or 10 :-\ it's lame, but there are ways around like VPNing
And by throttled I mean silly low speeds under 1MB/s sometimes as low as 250K :-\
I don't use Usenet. I think... :-/
