Title: Bulk user creation / copy within AD
Post by: Leon on November 19, 2007, 15:04:22 PM
Right... I got a f**king annoying project call to create 140 users with basic access and RSA tokens and not a chance Im doing it manually. I know for 2000 you had batch cmds like LDIFDE to do mass imports and exports but its never something I really got into...

So question to you guys is anyway I can go about batching this? AD running on 2003 Server SP2

Cheers
Leon

Creat an Arcetype user, then right click>Duplicate User, youll just have to put the names in.

Typing in 139 firstnames, lastnames, username and passwords isnt really speeding up the process.

quicker than creating a  fresh profile, typing in all that info, then adding each user to the correct AD groups.  Its why most places employ an underpaid chod for data entry.

Im assuming you dont have previous data to work from?

We have couple of those poor underpaid data entry people but becuase this is project based Ive been given these :(

The accounts are simple and it would simple to create one with the correct groups and copy, as you say its slightly faster than each on their own but not what im going towards. More or these might be coming in soon as we have just brought out another company and everyone is moving over to our terminal servers :(

There are ways, but dont think you can do it without coding something up. :)

Just been making something along the same lines in work, and no what Ive done cant help you unfortunately.

However this should: http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/59bec076-01fe-4d09-8b4b-296e7fa9c5571033.mspx?mfr=true

Make a batch file and get busy. remember... batch files can read from text files :) So give stuff a delimiter and sorted.

Google csvde, ldifde, dsadd, dsmod and dsrm and see which combination of tools you need to do what you want. Failing that, you could do it all in a VBScript with ADSI (possibly somthing else for the RSA tokens, not sure)

Ah, the life of a techy, when its acceptable to spend 3 days finding a clever solution to something that wouldve probably taken about an hour by hand
