Title: cheap but moddable case?
Post by: Beaker on December 09, 2006, 09:05:49 AM
Im looking for a largish case.  Needs to take 4xHDD, 2x5.25 external bays, enough room for me to fill up a couple of the PCI slots without it getting too cramped.  Oh, and i want steel. Its easier to work than aluminium and much much easier to spray up.  I wont be adding a window either, its getting at least 3x120mm fans in it when its done so no room for a window.

give me your suggestions please. :)

Not the prettiest case in the world by any stretch of the imagination but it seems to fulfill most of your criteria :)

Chieftec (http://www.savastore.com/productinfo/product.aspx?catalog_name=Savastore&product_id=10279222&pid=44&rstrat=0)

Looks reasonable.  Not too sure about the door but a definate Good Find.

Basically ill be buying the case soonish, then spending time modding it and building my own wiring rig for powering the drives etc.  I want something thats tidy and can be easily kept that way for airflow.  That means cables in conduits inside the case and the like.  Im fed up of spending hours tidying the wires and the 1st time you go near it to change something it makes it look like a birdsnest again.

I have a chieftec scorpio (same but with a nicer looking front fascia) in silver, with a window and window etch if youre interested.  Would be a bitch to post though.

[edit again] ah, misread your post - thought you wanted a window.  nevermind.

Theyre damn good cases to work with though, highly reccomended.

thanks but im after something with no window.  Im going to put a 120mm fan in the side and build a conduit to the CPU.  im also intending on making 3 compartments inside the case.  1 for the CPU, 1 for the HHDs and motherboard and one for the PSU and CD Drives.  If i can do that then drop a 120mm fan pushing air into each one then i should have a nice chilly system.  I would go water cooled but as the PC gets moved for LANs and the like im sticking to air.

Anything is moddable with a CNC machine.  :D

How would you mod that?  Replace its eyes with Leds?

Not as cheap but very well provided with fans so you probably wont need to add them, I have been thinking about one of these if I actually get around to upgrading ;)

Take the brain out and put a terminator CPU in as a replacement part ;)

nice, and no doubt the cooling will be brilliant, however the non-standard fans  kind of put me off.  If either ever breaks itll be back to the drawing board.  The 92mm fans i had in my last case where the reason I got rid of it, at the time i couldnt buy them anywhere!

They should contain normal motors as sold by virtually every model shop ;)

My brother has one of their earlier versions and it has a model motor powering the big front fan on it :)

I like the door on my case, gives me a very handy place to hang my headphones :)
