Just curious how to find out what XBOX model i own, without having to open the entire thing up?
I was told checking a serial number will tell you, but is not always accurate?
I currently own the limited edition transparent green XBOX, which i bought roughly in 2004. Wanted to buy an xcecuter 3 CE mod for it, but with all those revisions of XBOX mentioned, i was clueless, goes from Version 1 to Version 7 or something?
Any body know?
Cheers
MGT
You can tell from the serial number, I cant remember which part but there are tables around online.
Ill have a look tonight if you still need one.
Out of interest why are you chosing a modchip over softmodding?
EDIT:
Apparently the old way of finding out using the serial isnt as foolproof as it used to be but it should still work:
Serial Number: XXXXXXX 20XXX = v1.0
Serial Number: XXXXXXX 21XXX = v1.0
Serial Number: XXXXXXX 23XXX = v1.0 or v1.1
Serial Number: XXXXXXX 24XXX = v1.1
Serial Number: XXXXXXX 25XXX = v1.1
Serial Number: XXXXXXX 30XXX = v1.2
Serial Number: XXXXXXX 31XXX = v1.3
Serial Number: XXXXXXX 32XXX = v1.3
Serial Number: XXXXXXX 33XXX = v1.4 or v1.5
Sorry what is softmoddind sexytw? Do you mean like putting a boot disc or something?
I just wanted to play backup games, my own dvd-r and cd-r media with mp3s and stuff.
Any idea?
Network avadiable streaming of videos thats what its for :) Absoloutly love the xbox for that :)
Order the Xecuter 3. its going to be a 1.6 or 1.6b.
Still chippable. Just take your time with the LPC rebuild board.
I wouldnt bother softmodding. Chipping is easier in the long run.
Softmodding gives exactly (from what I have ever read) the same effect as chipping except you dont have to open up the xbox.
It does have the possible downside that you cant turn it on and off to play on xbox live. However you can boot into the standerd MS dashboard easily on most of the new softmods or just play on xlink (a free version of xbox live).
And, as for difficulty, I cant imagine anything easier to do.
1 - Copy a special save game file from a memory card to the xbox harddrive
2 - Load the save game from inside the correct game
3 - Select your options and click the install button
Voila.
How do you propose to get the special save game file on a memory card? That will cost almost the same as getting a modchip.
True, Im not saying its cheaper, although it was for me.
You need:
1 Action Replay thingy Ã,£15ish of eBay
1 Original Game (MechAssult or James Bond) Ã,£3 2nd hand from any game store
Maximum of about Ã,£20 total.
Also, there is really no risk involved, unlike dismantling and soldering a chip to your box. Plus, once youve done one you can do as many as you like. It takes 5 mins so its not even a hassle.
Im not counting out doing a hardware chip but I have just never been given a reason that seemed worth while.
i just want to be able to play emulators on my xbox really.
also i am an xbox live noob, lol having never tried it (posted a thread; what i need to get started on xbox live), and i really want to play online now, seeing as i have all the LAN setup with xbox already on it.
Main concern homebrew and emulation :)
xbox live and homebrew does not mix
live has protectors to stop people with modded xboxs going on
so choose which
sorry, what i meant was play homebrew games, not online or anything. So like with the Xcecuter 3 i can disable it and play xbox live with my normal games.
So chip on for emulators and stuff, chip off for live. LOL if that makes any sense
problem being, i am pretty sure at least at some point they were banning people from xbox live if people signed in with a modded xbox.
Upgrading the HDD is a lot harder with a softmodded xbox.
Whilst youve got it open fitting a chip, you may as well slam a big hdd in it.
If your not confident with your soldering, I can chip it for you.
Quote from: soopahflyits going to be a 1.6 or 1.6b.
:o Nathen just spoke some twaddle.
Afaik, all greens are v1.2 - mine is. I know this for a fact, having replaced various bits n bobs on it!
[
e!] Just found this:
QuoteIf you have a "Halo Special Edition" Xbox (translucent green), you have version 1.2, which has been made in weeks 8 and 9 of 2003 on lines 2, 5 and 6.

Ah, I thought they were the first of the 1.6s.
Aint going to mount to a whole hill of beans, as the X3 will do all versions.
LOL! Thank god i read this ;) lol
My green xbox was just a limited edition pack with 2 green pads, came in a white box. Im not sure if it has anything to do with Halo though :/ I thought it was made in 2004, but i dont have the faintest idea.
Thanks for the offer of help soopah! Im gonna try and get some experience doing this lol, that might mean even if i end up buggering it up.
PS - I forgot completely about the HDD! I guess a big one is a must. Can i use the hdd to put emulators and roms on there without using a dvd to run them?

If its the translucent green, which I know it is, as its the only green box they did, its the same as mine, and a 1.2, as Nathen also states 3.0 will do all :D

Yes
Well, looks like chip has won, but just to note that I found it very simple to replace the hd, im not aware of any difference in the method to be honest.
Good luck with your first mod!
Softmods are vunerable to dash updates and similar updates required to play the latest games, although as of yet...this hasnt happened.
The Crystals were 1.6
Ive ordered the xcecuter 3 CE :D
Buuuut, i am tempted to get the xapter solderless thingy LOL! Is that worth it you think? It has a nice blue neon light, which i guess cannot be seen anyway under all the bits and bobs lol
