Title: close the gate
Post by: Eggtastico on December 17, 2010, 22:46:27 PM
Stargate cancelled.

http://www.bscreview.com/2010/12/stargate-universe-cancelled-by-syfy/

For the first time since 1997, the Syfy channel will be Stargate free. According to ComingSoon, Syfy will end the action-adventure series, Stargate Universe, in the spring of 2011 after airing the final ten episodes of its second season. While no official reason has been given, low ratings are thought to be the deciding factor.

SGU wasn't the only series that got the axe. Syfy also canceled this outer space adventure-drama.

The first Syfy series based on Stargate, the 1994 movie, was Stargate SG-1 which picked up where the movie left off. The plot soon moved further away from the original storyline and added additional elements that allowed for a spin-off series, Stargate Atlantis, to be created. SG-1 was on the air for ten years, Atlantis for five years. Stargate Universe was just introduced in 2009 and is already being yanked off the air, which could mean viewers have either grown tired of the Stargate franchise or the new storyline just didn't appeal to fans.

Stargate Universe was about scientist Dr. Nicholas Rush (Robert Carlyle) and his team of military and scientific personnel who end up on the Destiny, a starship built millions of years ago by the Ancients and programmed to go to the far ends of the universe.

I couldnt agree more. Given how enjoyable most of the Stargate franchise has been up to this point the latest offering was pretty dire by comparison.

Can't say I'm surprised tbh, but saying that I thought it had improved quite a bit over the first series, the story was a little more coherent at least.

That leaves zero shows from the Syfy channel on my watch list when this and Caprica finish airing the remaining episodes, SyFy should be ashamed!

Both shows had similar problems IMO lacking strong, likable and most importantly charismatic characters.

Stargate Universe tried to go down the route of Battlestar Galatica which was brilliant. They failed and yep, as mentioned it is boring has hell!
I keep trying to give it a chance but its a snooze fest. When they finally met aliens and space battle was kicking off I was like "finally!" but to little of it.

The problem is the writers are writing utter sh*te (compared to SG1 and a lesser extent Atlantis.) This coulda been really good but they f**ked up and I think nobody is surprised they cancelled it. I dont blame Syfy but I do blame the writers/production staff for getting peoples hopes up for another Stargate program and then writing complete drivel that isnt interesting, compelling and also frankly quite boring, when it could have been really good.

I find myself agreeing with Chris and Chaotic. Bad scripts and badly selected cast meant it didnt have much hope of success.

Yep, ropey as they were they did have a certain charm to them that they just havent been able to replicate in Universe.

The quality cast carried the first few series of SG1 IMO and also the last few as well!
