Title: Coolermaster M520 Modular PSU - Molex Fittings
Post by: raymondkerr on February 06, 2009, 20:29:19 PM
Just built myself a gaming rig using the above PSU.  I have a Sata HD and IDE DVD drive, connected 2 modular cables for the power.
However tonight, I am just about to install 2 cathode tube lights that have the basic (white/clear) 4 pin molex connector, but on my
PSU, the Molex plugs are too big, they fit on DVD drives but wont connect to the basic white molex on the cathodes.

Am I being silly, but I thought all Molex plugs were the same size ?  Why have coolermaster decided to make there plugs slightly different ?
I could probably remove the white molex on the lights and just plug in each pin, but that is risky, incase they short out ?

Any ideas, can I get an adapter of some sorts ?

thanks
Raymond

They should fit :/

They run 12v iirc so you could cut & paste the connections easily enough.

they will be the same size.... Ill just be the ends on the cathodes arnt lining up quite right... give them a wiggle and they should fit...  its better to wiggle the wires than the white/clear plastic bit

(sometimes they can be a right pita !

(unless theyre a mile off ?  do they kind of plug ina  little bit ?)

could always nick a new plastic bit from an old fan or something ?

Make sure you arent plugging them in upsidedown.

Thanks guys for the posts, maybe I didnt really explain it too well, but there is no way that the coolermaster black molex plugs are the same as the cheap clear/white ones on the cathode lights.  I have built many machines over the years and never came across a problem like this.  It is strange how the plugs fit into my Sony DVD drive though.  The only way to make them fit, would be to remove the molex plug from the cathode and put each pin in individually but I dont want to chance this, incase they touch.

The only other thing I was thinking, could I plug the lights into a fan connector on my motherboard ?  would this provide power as I have a molex to mini fan adapter wire ?

Pics would be useful, if it isnt one of the ones posted by Egg.

black one is not a SATA power block is it? (see below)

Only if you fancy trying to blow your motherboard, the power rating of a motherboard connector isnt much.

The large Molex to the right in the picture.  My coolermaster power supply has SATA and IDE (Molex) plugs in black.  But it wont allow me to plug into the white molex.  Sorry for the delay in my reply. I will try and post a picture of both plugs very soon.

wiggle the pins. The cheap 3rd party stuff molex are quite flimsy. the pins move around a lot. - try it yourself, see how much movement is in the pins using a pen or somthing.

Upon closer expection, Ive just noticed that the Molex is different from the normal ones, each pin is seperated by a plastic edge and the molex has square edges rather than cut corners.

here is a picture, It would appear that Ill have to remove the pins and fit them into a standard Molex from a spare cable.

This Molex from the Cathode Light, Doesnt Fit.

That is odd!

Cant you just swap the plastic connectors?
long nosed pliers should be able to push on the wings that hold the pins in place.

THere a tool that comes with this kit for £4 from maplin

yeah that is freaky....

as egg said, swap it for another plastic bit... I normally use a small screwdriver/paperclip/etc.. to push in the sides of the pin which hold it in place... :-)

Thats because its the wrong way around! Someones assembled it back to front.

raymond, you dont need to swap it, try pulling the pins back out and putting them back from the other side, make sure you get them in the right order ;)

thanks Serious, well spotted I just looked at it before attempting to remove the pins, the plugs has been put on the wrong way, Ill tackle changing the plug around.  Many thanks everyone for your help.
