Title: Copying profiles - help!
Post by: Pete on March 12, 2007, 20:42:53 PM
SDPCSE question:

I got a PC on a domain, theres no roaming profiles or owt.
I wanna replace the PC with a new one which has fresh XP etc on it, so to copy the users stuff over am I right in thinking;

* RC My Computer, System Properties, Advanced, User Profiles.

* Click on profile to copy, click on Copy To, type in \\PCNAME\?????

the ???? is what Im not sure about, should it be the Docs & Settings folder or \\PCNAME\docs&settings\Username.

Do I need to make a blank profile for the user on the new machine first by logging him in and out?

Any help would be appreciated.

youll still have server side profiles yes?

Just log on, join it to the domain and itll set up a local profile.  obviously youll have to send the docs and the like to the server for later copying back. Though its a prime point to get the users on Roaming profiles, even if they are bloody annoying.

Were moving to a new domain and exchange soon, so this is a just-for-now thing.

I just tried it on my workgroup and I think Ive worked it out. The only thing that went wrong is Outlook doesnt work on the new account. Dunno what thats about but meh, I think Ill do it the old fashioned copy/paste way.

might want to unselect domain security in outlook if you have issues.  been there before, and the setup did my nut in.

Export the old outlook settings as a PST file and import it on the new profile.

XP profiles can be a royal pain, the best way is the file & settings transfer wizard, but dont rely on it alone.

The cowboy way of doing it is pointing the new profile at the old profile folder in Local Disk\Documents & Settings.
