I think that FF (or Fx as the site claims it should be abbreviated to  ), became so popular because people wanted to get on the MS is evil band wagon, and saw FF as a great way to do it.
This coupled with it being a new browser technology when released meaning few people had found exploits at the time.
More recently it has become popular because of word of mouth, Its safer and faster than IE etc etc.
Just a few points to get started. :)
I prefer firefox, because i prefer apps that arent so closely integrated to the OS. IE has hooks right into the kernel, firefox works on the application layer. so when it crashes is doesnt take the entire system with it.
Opera is way nicer imo.

MY DOLLYS BETTER THAN YOUR DOLLY !
Opera looks nicer but is too sluggish and less user friendly I find.
Myth - "Firefox is Bug Free" - Example
Reality - Firefox is like any other software application and has plenty of bugs and problems. - Source
So very true to the point of narking me off with Fx.
My dolly HATES your dolly, Alan.

Indeed, IE does take explorer down with it, but CTRL+ALT+DEL -> File -> New App -> "Explorer" sorts that.
Ive been using Firefox quite a bit recently with the noscript addon as I became a little paranoid about the safety of my wow account, and tbh I might as well be using a text-only browser.
IE7 only seems to have problems with one or two pages claiming I need IE6 to view it (ironically enough it was an
msn.com page), whereas I come accross pages that Firefox cant display 100% correctly on an almost daily basis.
I have to say Firefox is my least favourite browser, especially through Windows. Im an Opera user and I love it. Its got its faults for sure like they all do but I find it the best of the bunch.
Fx is just like anyother non MS application; not quite as polished.
I use Fx as my primary browser but I will go back to IE just as soon as there is a decent gestures/browser plugins system for IE.
edit:
I just googled for IE Mouse Gestures and found some, so Fx can now kiss my swingers :p
Ive also just found a bounty of IE plugins that you can download for free from MS :o
Linky Nimrod?
With Tabs/Mouse Gestures in IE Id probably have no reason to use Firefox anymore tbh.
yeah I guess a Linky wouldve been handy (http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/details.aspx?view=info&itemid=3407728)
I suppose one of my other reasons for using Firefox as well is that i mainly use Suse these days, and i somehow cant see MS making a Linux port of IE.
i never find pages Fx cant deal with, though my browsing habits are fairly static, not much roaming done.
however having the ability to take screen shots from the browser (screen grab), sync my bookmarks across all my pcs (foxmarks), grab a color ref (various), write html and css on pages amonsgst many other things (web developer), restart firefox from a button, open last closed tab (native), measure images (measureIt), all the gestures etc, fill forms out etc, how long do you really want me to go on.
Fx is a geeks tool, IE is a users tool. Fx allows you to do stuff with your browsing, IE allows you to browse. Horses for courses...
Matt
Opera FTW.
Very fast (dont know how you managed to get it to be sluggish) and very customisable. Had tabs and mouse gestures before Firefox and the mouse gestures are way more reliable and seamless.
FF is great and the principles driving it are good, but I personally dont like it.
