Title: District 9
Post by: Quixoticish on September 07, 2009, 00:27:18 AM
Absolutely cracking film. Like all good sci-fi it offers a hefty amount of social criticism about xenophobia and draws heavily on the obvious apartheid themes whilst still knowing when to ladle on the action or the more emotive scenes.

I dont want to comment too much lest I spoil it but it really was a pleasant surprise and behind Star Trek and Watchmen has probably become one of my favourite 2009 movie releases.

A good solid 8/10 from me, and something Im going to have to watch again.

Want to see this, Interesting views on this though.
25+ seem to think it is fantastic, 45-50+ seem to either like it or have no idea what they just saw and from family and friends below 20 they thought it was a pile of crap.

Seems to be a real intellectual movie with a lot to it?

There were a lot of people in the cinema who didnt get it, it seemed to be a 50/50 split. I dont know how you can miss the fact that its really a film about apartheid, district 6, xenophobia and racism but a lot of people did and were actually laughing at some rather poignant moments because it was funny looking aliens and not black humans being marginalised. It really makes you wonder about latent racism in people at times, and it really is a film that makes you stop and think.

Its not an action film at all so I understand how some would have been disappointed, but Id certainly recommend it.

It also demonstrates how stunning you can make something look on a relatively small budget of $30,000,000 and the CGI and effects put some major $100,000,000 Hollywood products to shame.

So would you say it is one of those ones that if you get it you like it but if you do not get it, as with how people are if you do not get something your first reaction is to not like it?

Watched it yesterday, brilliant film.

Not easy watching though, found it pretty tough going at points.

Well worth more than one watch.

I think if people missed the subtext then theyd be disappointed; if you went in expecting an action movie about aliens and biological weapons and lots of explosions then youll be disappointed. Thats not to say there arent a couple of really well put together action pieces in the film but they dont drive the narrative at all.

personally... I don;t thing its one of those films thats you can really love... it would be a bit like loving a documentary ?

but at the same time... I thought it was really good...

and as above, the CGI was spot on for such a low budget film... there was so much of it too.... the actors did a hell of a good job - they must have spent a hell of a lot of time acting alongside an empty space....  theres plenty of times that kind of thing happens in major films and it stands out a mile.... this mixed in really well.

tho I definitely think anyone who doesnt get it will think its total crap

I wonder if I will like it, given the fact that I havent really got much of any idea about apartheid really, though abore racism.

Thing for me is dam Halo would have been good if these guys made it if this is what they did instead. Going on their Halo marketing shorts and concept stuff they did as well. Would have been very good.

I watched the full Landfall vid thats free on Xbox marketplace. Id previously seen the first bit (the production line) but not the firefight bit. I sat there thinking "this is pretty cool" closely followed by how even with the all the effects, it still held an element of fan-filmism, and how sadly I think even if they put craploads of money into it, a halo movie would end up looking a bit like the you-tube vids of geeks dressed up as space marines / master chief /

Halo would have just been an action film. Instead they made something much more than that and that is why its such a successful film.

Looks like an action film, smells like an action film, I think its an action film. Not that thats a bad thing but District 9 is so much more than that; it will also be a much better career move and is a much more enjoyable viewing experience that flashing lights and loud explosions. A live action Halo film would have done nothing other than cement the teams reputation as the next Michael Bay.

no district 9 came from district 6 .ive been there.
QuoteDistrict Six (Afrikaans Distrik Ses) is the name of a former inner-city residential area in Cape Town, South Africa. It is best known for the forced removal of over 60,000 of its inhabitants during the 1970s by the apartheid regime.

Tbh though, he does have a slight point RE: South Africa, in the sense that 2 of my friends basically have been sent over from South Africa to go to uni and do a masters just to keep them away for as long as possible. But the nastyness isnt race specific.

no?

Whites have everything there & blacks have nothing, because of the whites.

Good luck to the blacks, its their rightful country.

Just back from watching it, I too thought it was awesome, though disagree RE: leaving room for a spin-off or sequel. Lots of potential for three different routes they could take, and I hope they do. Admittedly I dont think if they did a sequel or series it would ever be as good, still good, but not as powerful as this film was, just as Im not sure there could be much further development in terms of themes. Cant really say more without spoiling it...

I thought the problem these days was that the white people had all the money and power for as long as anyone can remember, but now they have a black government theyre kicking all the (rich) white people out and every things going down the pan because theres no money left ?

I watched it tonight and thought it was excellent, very very well made.

Wonder if they will do a sequal three years later sort of thing, the Aliens come back for some revenge.

My GF was funny though, "Why are the South Africans talking in that funny accent? Are they doing it to take the piss out of the aliens?"

Well, now youve given away a little bit of a spoiler...(spoilers maybe below)

Whos to say the aliens would want revenge? You see how powerful their tech is in the film, why didnt they use it in the 20 years to get revenge or more resources?

Possible sequels would be what happens in District 10...or ship comes back and either instigates a war or the integration of the aliens, to peoples disgust, plus whatever happened to the main character...

Everyone like the other videos so Knowing that, yeah your probably right. They put some more money into this to get some more special effects. Different people made it but you know bungie are there to give it that feel and base like the other videos and I just think it would be an amazing movie.

I really want to know why the WB, Jackson, Weta, Whats his face and Bungie could not get it going, probably to many cooks in the kitchen I would expect and sky rocketing costs as a result. To many people wanting a peace of the pie.
