Title: Domain backordering?
Post by: zpyder on February 13, 2011, 10:46:02 AM
There's a domain coming up for renewal in the next couple of months that so far hasn't been renewed according to Whois, and which I want to use for my personal website rather than zpyder.co.uk, I doubt I'll remember to register when it expires so I'm left with having to use a backordering site.

However, paranoid conspiracy theorist that I am, I don't know which ones to trust, does anyone have any recommendations? I'm kinda thinking that if you started typing in the domain you're thinking of, even if there is no interest the companies will register them to force you to buy them from them?!

Chances are whoever has it will just renew it

Yes, and what happens if they decide they don't want it any more and let it lapse? It's worth a shot, they renew it and it costs me nothing, or they don't and I get a domain I've been waiting for for the last year...

There are domain sniping tools that basically try to register the domain every few seconds on the date it expires. Google "domain sniping".

Never used any, so can't recommend one.

Cheers, I knew someone had mentioned something ages ago, which is why I was slightly surprised there's been less of a response!
