Recently released system specs for Fallout 4 say it will run on Windows 7 / 8 / 9 / 10. Will it run on Vista and they've just left it out?
Maybe they don't expect anyone to be running Vista? :muttley:
To date, I've seen no reason to upgrade it tbh.
Which is the better upgrade? 7, 8 or 10? What's the cheapest upgrade path?
7 is better than 8 imo
havn;t used 10 yet, waiting a bit longer so there's more drivers etc.. available ;-)
Worth just getting 7 for now, then?
I still use 7, won't upgrading anytime soon
Nothing wrong with 10, I see no reason not to jump straight to it.
thats a good point... if you're already upgrading anyway might as well go straight to 10
Yeah but the price... I know you can upgrade free to 10 from 7 so I'll probably do it that way.
good point, I forgot you're supposed to pay for windows :-s
of course... I'm still running windows 95 which came free with my first PC...
I got a pre-release copy of windows 7 from MS, it has no limit on transfers between computers so I have used it ever since. Avoided 8 and 8.1.
Will probably update to 10 free.

...but will it run on Vista? ;D
Where can I buy a legit Win 7 Pro disc? Can't see the wood from the trees.
Ebuyer has it listed at £109 and Win 10 at just a few pounds more. Surely that ain't right?...
Do you need Pro or how about 7 Home Premium?

Thanks. I suppose I don't need it but is XP Mode on the Pro version likely to be useful?
I've seen a couple of OEM copies on eBay for around £30 (from decommissioned systems) and, from seller feedback, folks seem happy.
What am I thinking?.... It's time to go for a new system!
Would someone be kind enough to spec me up a rig that'll play Fallout 4 (and then some). Let's call it future-proofed! Max budget, say, £800 ish but as low as possible of course.
Needs to do occasional, domestic level video-chugging, Photoshop, Graphics apps etc too.
Sensible case - nothing fugly.

Windows 7/8?
Looking at Novatech or maybe Ebuyer if they do a Buy Now Pay Later deal?... :ptu:

Intell 6600 or 6600K, if you want to OC
H170 Chipset Motherboard equals no OC.
Z170 Chipset Motherboard will give all the features & Raid and OC Ability if you wan't it, plus 2 gpu's at 8x per slot
(note for motherboards i always go Matx and go for a smaller case)
8GB or 16GB 2666 Memory, i always go for Corsair but its preference
250GB Crucial BX100 / Samsung 850 EVO
1TB+ Drive of your choice, i only use SSD's these days, everything loads faster.
Radeon R9 380 GPU, i always go for MSI Dual Fan ones with 4GB Memory. If you can push another £100 look at the Nvidia 970 which is the best value/power for money.
I priced it with a:
Fractal Design Case, this is my preference for an MATX setup, but there are 100s of options.
EVGA Supernova 650W 80+ Gold Modular PSU. Semi Modular & Gold rated for under £70 is a bargain, this is what i'll buy next, i have been using Corsair but have had a faulty one recently.
OS your choice.
Screens, i always go Dell Ultra for the quality/ and unrivalled warranty, but they are not in the £800 unfortunately! :P

I believe those £30 Licences from decommissioned systems are single use but you would have to confirm that.
Thanks for that. Not looking to upgrade the monitor just yet. Big Dell thingy. Golden. And glorious enough for my needs. 8)

Do you mean you can't or you won't need to?
Jamies post spec looks good
remember to get a decent cpu heat sink, something like a Noctua NH-D14 SE 2011 (nice and quite + keeps cpu nice and cool)
for a case I bought a "nzxt source 210" to upgrade my CCTV system at work... great case, especially foe £40 - nice set out, motherboard tray, plenty of fan holes etc..
after seeing that one my nephew bought himself one, and I'm going to get another for my PC as I switch back to air cooling ready to move house (have water cooling hoses running inside the walls down to the celler right now!)
I might not have made clear: I'm looking to buy off the shelf. Just don't have the time to do a build these days. Are Novatech well regarded?
not really
what about picking up a bare bones system, then installing your own gfx card ?
I'd just like to point out i've been using a standard cpu cooler for years and they are not so bad, i have tinnitus and its quiet enough not to bother me. :P

I might - if I knew where to look and what for... :-[ Just so out of touch these days as to what's what. :dunno:

Was the above priced on Ebuyer?
What brand is good for motherboards? I'm tempted to stick with Asus. I think I'm just gonna get a motherboard, graphics, RAM and memory for now and 'bung it in'... seems a waste of money to get a whole new rig when everything else is still good. I have a mid tower Antec ATX case and a 620w Corsair modular PSU .
This has an i7 at 6700k but only Kingston memory: http://www.novatech.co.uk/motherboardbundles/view/mbb-670016.html
A Gigabyte mobo and Kingston memory... worth a punt?
Its very likely a tried and tested bundle.
Also, http://www.novatech.co.uk/barebonebundles/view/bb-5660016.html
Well, well... so much for a cheap fix:
Intel Core i7 6700k Skylake Processor
16GB Kingston DDR4 (2x8GB) 2666Mhz
GIGABYTE GA-Z170XP-SLI Intel Z170 (Socket 1151) ATX Motherboard
Arctic Freezer 7 Pro Cooler
MSI GeForce GTX 970 GAMING TWIN FROZR V OC 4GB GDDR5
Corsair RM Series RM750 ATX Power Supply 750 Watt 80 PLUS Gold Certified Fully Modular PSU
1 x Samsung 850 Evo Basic 500GB Solid State Hard Drive 2.5" Basic Kit with Data Migration Software - Retail
Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
That should keep me going for a bit, right? ;D
Barely any difference in performance but cost a big difference, you should go for the 6600K!
I see you went for the MSI Twin Frozr, my personal favourite type of GPU and the Corsair RM Series PSU is a nice one!
The 6700k was part of a bundle (and the only i7 Skylakes they do apparently) so went for it anyhoo.
Thanks all for the advice. Cookies/virtual beers on the way. ;)
Going for assembly tonight - wish me luck!
Its not as hard as it used to be, just read the manual to make sure you plug everything in :P
My last build (2007) took me best part of two days - but that included hours and OCD hours of "getting the thermal paste juuuuuust right"! :panic:
Thankfully the bundle's assembled and good to go so just a case of stripping the old stuff out and bunging it all in. I hope... :worried: ;D
I'm real fussy as well, everytime i upgrade i have to buy a new case and all new components as i hate putting new bits in with dusty bits.
Make sure you get some cable ties.
This is not going well. Everything's in and looking spangly but it goes into a boot loop when powered up. It switches on for about 4-5 seconds then shuts off and powers on again ad infinitum.
So far I've tried unplugging GPU, isolating other peripherals, fans, drives, USB cables etc.
Any suggestions before I'm forced to rip the CPU heatsink out?
ETA: Don't mind me... I'd forgotten to stick one of the power cables into the mobo! :-[ :muttley:
I half expected that to happen :D
Blimey. 25 seconds from cold boot to desktop. :o I should do this more often!
