Can anyone give me a link please to download a random file which will test my internet speed. Ive ran spped tests etc, but just interested in downloading a proper file from a source which is known to have good downloads etc.
Cheers :)
I generally try downloading 1080p trailers from the Apple website when I want to do that, that is generally a very fast mirror. Microsofts can be too, try downloading SP1 for Windows 2003 or something
http://www.mirror.ac.uk
Usually a good one for download testing.
U can try this and see how well u connect to sweden.
NOT to use on WLAN though.

or this in english but the same I belive.

Are you asking because all of a sudden you got really poor download speeds even with your connection fine?
If so your not the only one from a wide variety of ISPs and talk on web blogs seems to be bt faults somewhere in midlands.
If not ignore me :)
Cheers for them guys :)
The reason for doing it is ive recently just got upto 8meg broadband with Toucan for Ã,£15 a month.......now I know its cheap so arent expecting that much from it. My router is connected at 8.2meg, so I thought id get fair fast downloads.........but for example, from the Microsoft website I get around 120KB/sec which is more like 1meg to be honest. Im still on this give it 10 days to settle and get the best line speed thing which ive read about. But at the moment im pretty disappointed with the speeds.
Downloading a popular torrent file is a good way as well. Legal one of course. ;)

Try downloading several big files at once and see if it improves, sometimes when you are downloading a single file the server may limit your speed, could also be your provider throttling back too ;)
Yeah, I could be getting throttled as it is a cheap ISP which im with.
Could things pick up after the 10day period thing? I aint really heard of this before.
Wouldnt trust it but you can only give them a bit of time just in case. Unfortunately you arent assigned an exclusive 8mbit pipe you have to share.
That chocky orange isnt terrys and Im not sharing either! :D
Im supposed to have up to 8 meg broadband from talktalk but its never connected at more than two. Its rock solid at that though and still cheaper than pipex.
Yeah, I just went for cheapness as I dont use the net that much anymore really. My router is connected at 8meg though, before it was 7meg, and over night went to 8.
sign up for a news account with astraweb.
I havent found anyone cheaper with unlimted downloads - Ã,£9 a month for unlimited speed, unlimited download
I get 6 Mbps+ on pipex ADSL MAX

Thats why I like cable, you dont get this "up to" nonsense. You get the connection speed you pay for. Or you do in my experience at least so all the cable haters out there can STFU :P
Alot of adsl providers are switching their products from "8meg" to "up to 8meg", and severa; state that you cant expect more than 2meg at peak times.
Plus.net are really taking the piss with this lately, using "traffic shaping" to limit ftp and p2p to 2kbps at peak times, which is like 4pm til 3am in reality.
Anyway, to max out ya connection get DAP or sommink and use it to do 3 or 4 dls at the same time. Dont rely on speedtests.
http://www.speedbit.com/en/compare_privacy.asp
Whats the point of using DAP spd? Just looks like a cleaner program.?

heh, Telewests Customer service is bloody awful. Their product however isnt too shabby.
its also a download manager :)
If your looking for free large legal files. Download some linux distros :)
Dap can download from multiple sources, get 4 decent sources for the file and itll definitely max out your connection.
Normal dl:

same file but with Dap:

DAP is the only program I pay for, I love it.
Oh right I see. Will give that a go then! Cheers :D
tried downloading the same demo as you spd......and max speed ive got up to now with 20% complete is 130KB/s :(
I just tried downloading it with DAP Premium, got around 350kb/s - steady 8meg connection.
Did anyone try the tptest proggy ? it is pretty good and u can try different servers than the default.

Yay for janet
speedtest.net doesnt work properly with high speed connections. it does 8mbit then panics.
like yours is showing 1mbit connection there, but its going at 10mbit according to the download and upload.
To put it into perspective... Ive had 5.6megabytes per second download in the mac lab in cardiff uni :D lol... downloading fedora core :D
Nice site that Tongy.

Not too bad for a 2mbit line. If you dont put your supposed actual line speed up then the result is pretty much useless for comparative purposes ;)

8 meg line :o

See what I mean. Says its a 2mbit connection.
Its 10mbit cable, and I was just downloading at 1MB/s
mmm, my test topped out at ~380kb
but Ive had 600k out of it before...
some times it sucks, some times it doesent :)
I have a huge problem, all of a suddon I have gone from up to 8mb topping out at 3mb down to..
Connection to a UK-London Server ->
2/17/200612:50 AM GMT
Down and up steam: 492 kb/s382 kb/s
basically while my upsteam roughly what it should be my down seems to be limited or capped by error to a 512kbps connection
currently doing emails
They wanted the standard tests done but done more then that
I bet you anything though it just looks like someone at pipex has whacked a limit on me where there should be none.
Right, Im going to try this out at work when Im in next week at night putting in the new 4510s.
We have a 100 Mbps MPLS link for internet connectivity, 8 x 16 Mbits (Mostly customer lines) and 10 x 2 Mbps for site to site VPNs
Work: (http://www.speedtest.net/result/66771951.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
Not bad for the upload there.. lol as it rose up was beginning to think we had SDSL or something :D
business adsl has higher upload speed than residential,
884 kbps or something sync speed from what i remember
home

wierd that it has to have a 100 mile round trip as i live about 12 miles away
ADSL Max just aint worht it at the moment in my opinion. It is not a fully tested service and a reliable one at that. Its no good for gamers Ive had friends having major problems with latencys and have resorted with going back to the straight 2meg lines.
Also as Serieous said sharing a pipe sux!
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/66806105.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
I get better rates than that im on a 512 pipex line and max out my line constantly on torrents and downloading in general. :)
ask them to take interleaving off if you game,
problem with adsl max is it shows up all the really cheap routers,
pretty much all my problems disappeared once id put a new router on my line.
I got
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/66984067.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
So is that saying 4mrg d/l? My router says im connected at 8.2meg, although I know I probably wont get speeds like this.
http://speedtester.bt.com if your on adsl...
Tests the speed from your PC through the BT pipes to the ISP, not to the internet, which helps determine where the problem lies!
I got this from that test Mooney:
QuoteTest1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 6244 kbps
If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.
If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.
Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.
Does that look ok???
Well, I just tried a random file download on DAP, and am pleased with the results!!
Although my modem says Im connected @ 1,334 / 17,764 [kbps]
I regularly download from newsgroups and high bandwidth sites (MS, Intel etc etc) at 1.8-2.0Mb/sec. Not bad for Ã,£24 per month 8)
What I get n 2meg ADSL

got fine upload, down though, ROFL
Send them all these tests and they have gone quite now after showing them I basically have a limit placed on me.
Will ring up Tuesday, just getting over my operation this morning today

2mbit NTL line: Download is good, but it demonstrates the appauling upload rate of cable :(
The best around where I live is 10 meg up and 10 meg down on fiberoptics or ADSL 2 up and 24 down.
Fiberoptics are cool 10 meg up is good and 10 down enough.

works
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/67354124.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
tis behind a proxy though and ive not idea what its upto atm, could be downloading or uploading 10MB e-mails as i type
Well i did speed tests for pipex data all yesterday, rang this morning, they agree there is ether a fault or bt have limited my download
And more like an error as the actual connection is fine and the upload is fine.
pop your exchange in here (http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/) and let us know what the VP status is,
red = congested exchange and the fibre optic backbone is over subscribed.

Mines Red :( Will the try and fix this problem then, or do people in Sunny Whitby just have to accept it?
read the page :)
 Yeah, that would be easiest I suppose :whoops:
What do they fix then?? Just add more/better hardware or something?
more hardware. All that red symbol is saying that there is high contention in your area. There is in mine too..but I have 4.5mbit speeds pretty much all day. :)
I see, cheers :) So in theory in the new year it should be better really.
I had red today but now its all gooooood
got fixed today
Happy again now
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/68112699.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
I just checked my exchange (Maida Vale) all comes up as red. Not that Ive noticed any major speed drops...
only time youll notice it is when everyone else is on the net downloading as well ;)
bit like the M25, its only busy when everyones using it

Top one is the one that counts.
Many have fix dates that are in the past too. The site isnt updated very often either making it practically worthless.
QuoteThe ETA fix time is: 15 Dec 06
Record last updated: 11 Dec 06
Ordered faster connection 24Mb Adsl 2mb up
I havent got the new modem yet but the speed has improved even with the old modem !!!

I have the best posted here I think :D

Guessing youve got the same as me (ADSL2+, which maxes out at 24) - youll never get 24. Youd need to be above/next to the exchange for that ;) If your not too far and the lines good upto 20, most people get 14-17Mbit.
Which is still pretty good over copper.... just need fibre now :D

I get quite bit more in upload but you have a little more down, I think the earlier test took another route 250 miles, this last one below went 200 miles.

;)
Sorry to bring up an old thread, but my connection recently was upgraded, something to do with LLU so my ISP says.
