Title: Fedora Core 6
Post by: Poison_UK on March 07, 2007, 00:03:28 AM
Anyone had any experience with Fedora Core 6, Ive had a play around with version 4 a while ago but wondering if I should keep away from Fedora Core or not. Trying to work out what to put on the laptop... :)

The only criticism I have of it out of the box, and this is just from reviews, is that the package manager Pirut, the front end to Yum, just sucks ass. Other than that, it seems well worth a try. Standard desktop just requires the first two CD isos.

So ditch Yum and Pirut and go with apt and th graphical front end Synaptic.

EDIT: Im not seeing a apt for Fedora 6 in the wild yet, but when you get it in a terminal:

$ su rpm -i aptXXX.rpm

to install it. You might just be able to click on it these days. Then:

$ su apt-get update

finally

$ su apt-get install synaptic

and youll have a much nicer package manager.

Or try Ubuntu. Theyre not much different except for the package manager. Suses really the odd one out with its slightly unconventional file hiearchy, not that thats a big deal. :P

installing Yumex may be a better solution:

$ yum -y install yumex
