Title: Fubar IPOD
Post by: shofty on June 07, 2007, 22:25:07 PM
Anyone know what to do next?

My Ipod Nano Generation 1 refuses to talk to linux and windows. it just doesnt talk to anything. never appears as a drive. never appears in itunes or winamp at all.

put it into disk mode and it still doesnt talk to the pc.

i could do with some sort of factory reset so it will clean it back to proper factory firmware. ive done the reset ive found on the device but it doesnt fix anything.

anyone any ideas? or is it time for a new iPod?

Matt

Try getting some marriage guidance councillors in...

it might be the cable or a connector. TBH it should be powered by the USB port while connected IIRC. If it has stuff on check that it plays. Try a different cable if you have one. Try a different Ipod if someone else has one available.

The "factory reset".  Is done through software.

Once you have forced it into disk mode you should be able to connect to with the ipod software/updater and maually reset it.

If you cant connect to it in any way after putting it in disk mode, there is nothing you can do yourself.

This is of course there is nothing wrong with your cables or USB ports.

my first post is woefully inadequate.

my lodgers shuffle works fine...

Ive bought a new 3rd party cable this week and it still wont connect.

so the fact that i put it into disk mode and it doesnt appear in windows means its broke?

can i send it away to get it fixed or is it new ipod time?

try your pod on another machine maybe?

sounds kinda strange, if your tracks are playing on your ipod but it wont connect to a machine then sounds like a dodgy connector within the ipod

@beaker and rivkid - when i know its fubar for sure, then Ill ask for opinions on what to buy next. though to be honest, ill be surprised if you tempt me away from my ipod. ;) :p

another point ive just realised.

the ipod dock / alarm clock in my bedroom (for when the girls want mr nasty with justin ;)) still plays music fine. so the ipod connector is working in some respect. just not to my pc. will take the company laptop home with me and try and hook it up to that.

thanks for the replies guys,

Matt

update.

its not the ipod.

it must be the oc, cos i gave the pod to a mate who says it works fine on his laptop.

Ive got a shuttle SN25P, so i tink I need to start working with that and see whats going on. Anyone got any suggestions? Everything else I own that works over USB works fine.

Do Ipods work on firewire?

If it doesnt work in windaz it might be a driver failure or the software might have crapped out.

didnt work in linux on the same box which is what leads me to suspect the hardware.

Its also possible they were never installed/loaded cause the hardware if foobared.

Not very likely for them to vanish from both windows and Linux.

what apps where they?

maybe it was something listening on the usb port and causing a conflict?? blocking other apps?
