RIght then, server is up and running, though its only got 512Mb at the moment because someone didnt come through with the RAM they offered me.
However ive a couple of little questions relating to setting it up for internet access. Ive got a variety of ways to do it, but im looking for a little input on how to firewall it (If at all). I have the following choices::
i) Configure the Speedtouch router to port forward every single service, and hope it works.
ii) Drop it in the DMZ and hope for the best
iii) Drop it in the DMZ with a software firewall (Probably and old version of Sygate)
iv) Drop my Firebox SOHO6 in the DMZ, and let that take care of port forwarding etc.
Opinions?
Easiest is to drop it in the DMZ and do bugger all, followed by software firewall, followed by Speedtouch setup then the Firebox..
I think that with all the ports that would need forwarding itd probably be easiest to put it in the DMZ with a firewall on it.
This will inevitably lead to a prolonged discussion of which firewall though, since youre going to need to tell the firewall not to complain whenever any inbound connection is attempted etc.
Id go with portforward. Hassle, but safer in the long run providing any other traffic will just go "WTF!"
I think the easiest would be is to just assign a game or application to the pc in this way the speedtouch will handle the forwarding automatically and your pc is also behind the speedtouch firewall.
BTW Beaker what games are you planning on running on your server?

ill have a go at the speedtouch, but at the rate the bastard thing is going im going to coat it in anthrax and send it back to Be*.
Sorry i haven;t completed it yet, that was this weekends plan, but on Friday my BT line decided it didnt like working anymore, and ive only just got it back and working this morning. Give me until weekend and itll have UT1 installed and ready to roll. Ill pull the server over weekend to install and patch up Mech4, then ill get C&C Red Alert 2 installed and patched once i know those 2 work. Basically adding one game at a time and seeing how it works without overloading it instantly.
