Title: Games consoles vs TFT Monitors
Post by: Eagle on December 16, 2007, 12:57:44 PM
The PS2 looks like crap on my 24" TFT.

Which console gives a decent pic on a large TFT?  :-)

A good screen will fix any console.  As the PS2 outputs fine to a conventional TV Id imagine its the tv not processing properly and not the console.

The PS3 gives the best visual quality output of the lot though.

His screen is a Dell monitor AFAIK, not a TV.

ah ok. Then it has no upscale processing in it at all. LCD monitors arent able to do the stuff TVs do. You need something that will output at the native resolution so a 360 or a PS3. You could use an external processing box but itd add a delay you dont want when gaming

QuotePlaystation 2  Most games can only support 480i mode. Therefore, only those that support 480p, or 1080i mode can work with the X2VGA 2.
:(

Shame.  1080 is still only half my screen width.  Thanks anyway.  Guess Ill have to wait for the PS3 to come down a bit.

Just had this back from the manufacturer. And I cant make head nor tail of it...  :? Anyone speak techniclese?

QuotePlaystation 2: Most games can only support 480i mode. Therefore, only those that support 480p, or 1080i mode can work with the X2VGA 2.

In our test, X2VGA 2 can support 576p mode but Most Playstation 2 games can only support 480i or 576i mode. Therefore, only those that support 480p, 576p or 1080i mode can work with the X2VGA 2.Additionally, Most of the VGA Monitor needs to be put above 60Hz to ensure its normal operation but PAL 525p is just 50Hz, therefore your monitor must support 50HZ.

Because most games in Playstation 2 only support 480i, 576i mode, only a very few games support 480p, 576p or 1080 mode. 480i mode or 576i mode is not the main mode of the X2VGA 2, so we wont advice you to buy X2VGA 2 for Playstation 2 only.

Based on our experience, X2VGA 2 is suitable for your monitor. We suppose the 480p mode and the 720p mode can display normally, as for the 1080p mode, the possibility to dispalyl normally is 85%.But because we do not have the same monitor for a test, we cannot gurantee it can be surely used. We advice you to order the X2VGA 2 for a try.If it doesnt work, you can return it within ten days, and you will only be responsible for the shipping and handling fee.

The display ratio actually depends on your monitor brand and model. Generally speaking, it is common that the whole screen is covered, so if your monitor is 16:10, it can display 16:10 ratio, if it is 4:3, it display 4:3 ratio. With a regard to 480p, 720p, and 1080i are not the usual adopted modes by computers; therefore, to display 480p, 720p or 1080i on your monitors for the first time, you may need to adjust the screen size and its position with the monitors controls to fit the image in the whole screen correctly.

Worth a try assuming its not being shipped from China or something.

Coming from the states - theyve said its not going to work and advising you not to buy it so Id listen to them.

In that case the BEST option you are going to find is a VGA box. Most cheapie ones are only capable of 1024x796 so you need to look for better ones. I have a HK one that does 1440x990. Takes a little fiddling to get the picture right at first but the end result is perfect and I use mine to run PS2, Xbox and Dreamcast on my 19" widescreen TFT and it looks fantastic.

Something liek this :

although I had a cheapre Gadmei one that was crap - but something like that.

The resolutions look ok but thats basically a higher version of the Gadmei one I used to have and it was crap. Picture was awful and all you could see were lines in the background. The one I have is by a company called 10 moons but sadly I cant see a part code.

GPT - yeah one of these boxes (if we can find a good one) will let you do that. Mine has a coax input too which I use for my dreamcast.
