Title: Gaming computer. Need some advice.
Post by: Coded on July 22, 2007, 15:15:27 PM
Im looking at buying a new PC for myself as mies getting dated by now. I dont need a top-top end. I mainly play Counter-strike source, so I need one that can handle CSS on top spec. I play most games on xbox 360 so dont need to be able to play future games on high spec.

Also saving me to add a new topic :

I have an old shuttle for about 2 years now :

Shuttle SN85G4 v3
Nvidia nForce 250 (FN85)
200GB Seagate 7200
AMD A64 3000+ (Socket 754)
XFX Gefore 6600GT
LaCie 250GB External HDD (Firewire)
8x DVD-RW (NEC)
1GB DDR - Need to check what make etc.

(Cant think what else i need to list...)

What price would i get individually? or how much would it be together?

I run a slightly higher spec (A64 3700, 2gb, 7800gs AGP) and run CSS @ 1680x1050 full settings and theres only one default map I get below about 30fps, might be worth upgrading that rig rather than splashing out for a new one if all youre using it for is CSS.

whats the FSB on your processor?
i would consider upgrading memory+cpu at the same time to match compatible clock speeds

You can never have enough RAM really, and as stated upgrading both CPU&RAM will give a nice boost - would have thought the gfx should be the first priority though, given you are focussing on an FPS game (pun intended   )

Upgrade the CPU to the fastest single processor unit you can find. Unless you are going vista then 1GB should be enough for the moment, unless you can find it for a silly price.

1GB hasnt really been the standard for the vast majority of games for quite some time now. I honestly think a better performance gain would be had from upgrading to 2GB rather than the CPU if a choice has to be made between the two, although both could do with an overhaul.

Ideally upgrade the RAM to 2GB, CPU to the fastest you can find and the same for the graphics card and youll have a fairly good gaming rig that should be able to play most things you throw at it in some way, shape or form.
