Trying to get my ancient PC upto a bit more of a modern spec.
Its currently:
Abit NF7
Athlon XP 2500
Radeon 9800
1gb pc3200
80gb hdd
and starting to get unstable/unreliable.
im on a crap budget at the moment so what do you think of this?
Intel E2160 Socket 775 Pentium Dual Core 2x1.8Ghz 800FSB Retail Boxed Processor - heard this OC well, so should be good value.
Zalman CNPS7500-CU LED Socket 478, 775, AM2, 754, 939 & 940 CPU Cooler
OCZ 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 CL 4-4-4-15 PLATINUM XTC with LIFETIME WARRANTY - dont know much about DDR2 seems ok
ASUS P5KC AiLifestyle Series iP35 Socket 775 8 channel audio ATX Motherboard - looks good for future upgrades.
Geforce 7600GT 256mb DDR3 DVI HDTV TV Out PCI-E Graphics Card -
Samsung SpinPoint HD501LJ 500GB SATAII Hard Drive 16MB Cache - OEM
thats about £300
ive already got a decent case, psu, dvdrw, tft etc so dont need to worry about that.
But is it a 24 pin psu?
Quote from: soopahflyBut is it a 24 pin psu?
ill have to check but im pretty sure it has an extra 4pin square that slides into the side of the standard 20pin connector.
Looks ok, Ive got an asus p5k mobo and its runnung fine with my 20pin psu.
Id go for a better graphics card though.

yeah, thats just going to be a cheap stop gap until i can aford somthing better.
with these intel dual core cpus does the FSB and memory speed have to be in sync? like they do on the old socket a?
Im not sure on these, but the fsb of the chip isnt 800 but 200 ie 200x9 =1800, you cant have a 800 fsb and a chip speed of 1800.
my e6600 is 266/1066 fsb so 266x9=2400,
so my 6400 ram (same as yours)= 800, so my cpu can be overclocked to 3600mhz before the memory is overclocked.
so your chip can do 3600mhz overclock without touching the ram. 400x9=3600

Get on ebay if youre getting a last gen gfx card. I got a boxed msi 7800gtx for 31quid the other week.
The retail cooler is fairly quiet n should be ok for a decent overclock if you wanna save more pennies.

my mother board will do a 4:3 ratio so you can push the FSB way higher than the memory but 1:1 is better mostly, (my board tops out at 295fsb).
Just upgraded from about the same point. Bought an E2160 myself with a single 1GB stick of generic DDR2 667mhz memory, it goes about as fast as my brothers 3800+ which has two 1GB DDR sticks in. About to stuff 4GB (2*2gb ddr2 800 5-5-5-18) in the thing cause its dirt cheap.
Once Ive got that sorted I will underclock the ram and then overclock the FSB to pull it back up again, see what it can do.
The Present Intel boards arent all going to be compatible with the Nehalem chips apparently. that one may be, but not guaranteed. Asus have released a list of what _will_ be issued a BIOS flash. http://event.asus.com/mb/45nm/ Im guessing yours is actually included there.
On a another note, you can get an AMD Quad for an extra £60.
Total cost was £356.08 for an AMD 9500, X2600XT, Asus AMD770 series chipset, 2Gb of OCZ "Reaper" and a 500Gb Spinpoint at Aria. Regardless what you think about the AMD Quads, they are faster than any of the dual core CPUs on the market. When you take the cost of the Motherboard + CPU AMD can sometimes make more sense.
Same spec with a 5600+ instead is £316.72
Again with a 5200+ is £299.33
All prices included VAT and shipping.
I suppose its what you personally want in the end, but AMD has said their AM2+ chipsets will support right up to AM3 at a minimum. I would have priced up from TekHeads too, but it appears Poland doesnt like Tekheads website.

or

and get a gfx card from ebay.
wish i saw that quad core upgrade kit at komplett before i ordered my stuff.
anyway it all came today, didnt have a clue how to put most of it together lots of changes since sktA.
all up and running nicely now, got to 1333mhz fsb and 3.1Ghz @ 1.4v straightaway, havent tried any higher yet. gfx card is abit weak but itll be upgraded soon.
anyone know how to stop XP from throttling the CPU at idle? ive turned off intel speedstep in the bios but its still being knocked down to multiplier 6 (from 9) @ idle.
