My el cheapo digi box died last night so Im looking to replace with a decent freeview PVR. I dont really know whats out there and cant really find anything much either, its either abit low spec or way to pricey.
80gb is plenty and twin tuner would be nice, and HDMI with upscaling would be nice too but not really required.
anyone point me to a decent shop or link?
cheers
rob
Humax are the best from what i am aware, use one at home but it is an older model.
but they now do: http://www.humaxdigital.com/uk/products/pvr-9200t.asp which looks to be just about what you are after.
Meh got a humax downstairs - looks and acts cheap if you ask me. Be prepared for lots of crashes, lockups and other odd bits of behaviour. Upstairs now I have a Thomson- £79.99 on special in Tesco - 160GB twin tuner. Its been so much more stable and feels so much more expensive. Highly recommended.

it used to be the case that Topfield branded ones were the best, and you could archive to the PC
just to update this, i copped out with the high end stuff and just got a 160Gb twin tuner Thomson from Comet in town today.
Seems good so far, software is nicely set up, very fast and almost a clone of the sky setup. the topup tv people are morons though, rang them to set it up and they didnt know how :o isnt that your job i asked and he pretty much started crying. rofl

you have much trouble with it crashing?
mine has crashed 3 or 4 times this week and failed recording etc also im sure the picture quality is getting worse, all zig zaggy and blury.
Yeah mine does crash quite a bit - I was hoping its because its in a confined space and would be ok when I move and its got some airflow. Doesnt seem to be a widely reported problem. Havent had it miss recordings - its always crashed while Ive been playing (fast forwarding etc...). Picture quality is great Ive had no issues there.
i think my crashes might be to do with the poor signal, as the box doesnt freeze it just gets a picture of an aerial with an X, a reboot sorts it though.
are you using the standard scart lead that came with it?
my picture is dire, its hard to explain but e.g if i have a white verticle line on the screen like in the library or EPG then instead the 2 edges of the line being solid and straight, they have loads of tiny random spikes coming out the sides.

Your crashes def sound like poor signal - try getting a signal booster put in the attic as close to the aerial as you can get it. Your picture quality issue could be related although it could also be your connection or tv - but it almost sounds like an analogue problem.... ?
Im just using the standard scart at the minute and its been fine.
what is this "signal booster" you talk about?
cause i cant get many TV programs on my freeview and dont wanna fork out for a new aerial, might as well get sky if i was gonna do that

Just dont get one of the crappy cheap ones from Wilkinsons like I did...
yeah get a good one - mines made a hell of a difference. Just make sure you get it really close to the aerial. The further away it is the more static and interference is generated so when it hits the booster your just boosting all the crap!
spotted this, a few good reviews, anyone had one?
