Title: GPU Fan Question.
Post by: White Giant on January 22, 2007, 17:26:49 PM
I got myself a BFG 7800 GS OC graphics card a little while back. The first thing I noticed was how loud it was compared to my previous card (6600GT which I believe is with Beaker now).

Once XP had booted and the computer was idle it sounded like the GPU fan had stopped, further investigation showed that the fan ups its own speed as and when it is being taxed, and lowers it when idle or doing very little. Ive found that playing games, and watching DVDs causes this to happen - which I can understand.

What is puzzling me is why the fan would go all out when I start something like a torrent downloading program, or wordpad? Is it connected to how much power is being drawn from the PSU (for example starting a program requires HDD access, i.e. power from the PSU)?

Just something that popped into my head.  :-)

Nobody got a clue then?

might be related to processor usage perhaps? Drivers assume heavy processor usage is that of a game or rendering, or similar... so ups the fan speed?

Im thinking the same as M3ta7h3ad on this one, or it may be using the main CPU temp rather than one on the card as this would be cheaper.

Ah, that would make sense. Cheers for the replies.  :-)

does the gfx card really keep that close an eye on the cpu usage/temp tho ?

fair enough, therell be some system in there to balance your system out a bit when your playing games etc....

i think..... they have a cunning way to track how fast the fan should spin... something software basted without using cpu/gpu usage or temps... and it works most of the time... but slips uo now and again :D

tho... maybe I just like things like that :$

ahhhh, I just read an article about fan speeds changing after a driver update....

so Ive changed my mind now... I say its a driver thing !

needs to be relaxed a bit as its jumping in too early ;)

nope, wrong again, Im guessing now it used the same system as the 6600 which sets fan speed based on power usage :o

(deffo. what the 6600s do)

4rd time lucky :)

7950s tho?

It happens to me with my BFG Tech 7950 GT OC...

So is it general system power usage or gfx card power useage?
