So I have some bike wheel skewers I need to trim some excess off of. Problem is theyre tension steel, given theyre locking ones and so I guess made to reduce the risk of people cutting them. Ive tried getting at it with a hacksaw and not even made a scratch.
Just curious whether using a grinding stone attachment on a dremel will do the job? Anyone tried something similar? I wont be able to find out till after chrimbo due to the dremel being an xmas present :|

it will work.... but itll take forever with something the size of a dremel :(

I can either do it, or risk asking my plumber neighbour to have a go with his angle grinder. Id rather do it myself to save any hassle in case for whatever reason his angle grinder breaks, or ruins the skewers considering the cost.

Ive hacksawed high tensile bolts, you need a good blade and go realy slow.
If youve got a dremel can you not get a little diamond wheel or something?
Ive never touched high tensile gear myself but surely thatll make short work of it?

the dremel is a chrimbo present and out of principal Im not opening it till xmas, so I want to know if its possible, and if it it, which attachment is the best for cutting say 8mm off of a 5mm thick high tensile steel bolt.

Im guessing it should hopefully have something like that as its pretty much the "swanky" set that Ive got coming my way, plus Ive still got most of the bits from the old dremel and "rotary tools" kicking around :D
Well it cut through no problem. Took about 30-60 secs for each as I was taking it easy :D

The kit came with a Speedclic disc thingy and 2 metal cutting discs so I guess it was meant for the job. Now I just have to try and remember all the little jobs Ive been putting off thinking a dremel would make light work of them :D

Is there much torque in those things?
I have high speed air die grinders, but was thinking of something more portable.
Im not sure on the specifics but I know the one I got, the Dremel 4000, has an electronic feedback thingymajig which is meant to make sure that it provides consistent RPM. How well it works and what the max torque limit is I dont know, but I was carving some hardwood today with a drill bit in it using the flexi-shaft attachment with a fair bit of force and it didnt have any trouble. The max speed is 35k rpm so Id imagine if whatever it is youre doing doesnt work at that speed without applying much pressure, its not going to work anyway?
