Film rental firm Blockbuster is to rent high-definition DVDs in the Blu-ray format only at 1,450 of its US stores.
The move is viewed as a blow for the rival Toshiba-backed HD DVD format - which has been battling against the Blu-ray format, supported by Sony.
Blockbuster said that consumers have chosen Blu-ray over HD DVD in the 250 stores where both were available.

Im glad. Apart from Blu-Ray being the better format, It also gives me an excuse to get a PS3. This will be a big blow to HD-DVD & I cant see them pulling off somthing as significent as this.
You watch Choices go the other way now and support HD DVD!
by the way I understand the view that this might give you an excuse to buy a PS3 - but why the hell would you want to?!?
They are still doing HD-DVDs at the other stores and online so its really no big deal. Plus, its only in the US, over here they are still doing both apparently. Also, the US HD-DVD fans can always just rent from somewhere else like Netflix if they like.
Also, how is Blu-ray a better format? Other than having more space, there is really no difference and the fact that the spec changes in November is a little stupid of the BDA.

Because more space = Better
Why are we getting rid of DVD for HD-DVD? Because of Space.
Whats going to happen in 5-10years? Well have HD-DVD2, that has double the capacity.
Thats true of all storage media though, eventually something better comes along and there is a shift to that medium.
I prefer HD-DVD to BR because of the cheaper prices.

cheaper price my arse.
Embrace new technology & pay for it, or wait until it gets cheaper.
I remember when DVDs cost £5+ each. CD-R Media costing £3.
Everything comes down in price once it becomes mainstream.
A year ago, you could just about buy a plasma for £1k, 1080p would cost £3k+
Now you can buy Plasma 1080p TVs for less than £800

vhs-betamax, cd-minidisk, that other cartridge from toshiba and cant rememeber the other one, dvd - number of cartidges and that other disk
mini hardrive, flash
Cheaper in every case from production to manufacture(which is the most important) and sale the cheaper has become more popular and adopted over the others greater.
And like in the other threads - what the porn industry adopts has in the past been the winner hands down.
Note - read a number of articles on this blockbuster thing and you see that claims are very strong that Sony has payed blockbuster A LOT of money to do what they are doing.?
I meant the cost of ownership, not replication ;)
HD-DVD players can be had for less than BR.
HD-DVDs are cheaper than BR; at least where I shop they are.
That to me is reason enough to select HD-DVD over BR.

Manufacturing costs drop when new ways of manufacturing are researched & adopted.
Funny, even with this big expense that PS3 games are still as cheap as Xbox 360/wii games eh?

But you missed out the fact that even with the games, of which the game developers are annoyed with Sony and why more have gone multiformat or left from Sony Exclusive deals to go to nintendo or Xbox is the fact that the development of the games for the machine is to high, the cost of putting it on the disk is high yet the game price is close to that of the 360 when like on many articles a little while ago they all said it should at least be £10 more but sony kept it as it is so developers struggle with the cost
Every now and again since ps3 shipped in Japan you get an article on one of the gaming sites of another developer winging about the costs and the sale price ^^
:)
As someone said in terms of movies and the players a while ago
Joe blogs walks into a store and wants to go hd as he heard is better.
He gets sky hd, he gets a 40icnh hd ready tv (which may not be 1080p becuase the salesmen is ripping him off) and wants a player for it.
Sales guy will go
Salemen: "blue ray or hd-dvd"
Joe "What is the difference?"
When the salesmen will speak all that joe will here is "blablablablablablablablablablabla"
and all he will be thinking of
"hd tv, dvd, new dvd - hd-dvd, ooh look it is cheaper as well, they sound about the same, HD-DVD it is"
I will have a hd dvd player please.

Id be suprised if you was born when the VHS/Betamax war errupted. Infact, do you know why VHS won the War? Maybe go look it up. The quality difference between VHS/Betamax didnt really exist. Some tests found VHS better, some Betamax. The Best quality was video 2000, but that was a no-go for moves due to running time.. And thats where VHS won. Running Time. Nothing to do with porn. Especially back when VHS/Beta war raged. Betamax was released with 1hr running time. VHS could handle two hours... back then porn would usually be shot by the mafia in someones back bedroom, not at some fancy california valley studio. VHS was also about long before Betamax.
Mini disk/CD media comparing them is a non starter. Theres a ten year gap. It would be like developing a new music playing codec & trying to compete against MP3.
Again a non argument, Mini Hard Drives & Flash Memory. Its only recently that Flash memory has become cheap. I paid over £100 for a 4gb Compact Flash (mini hdd) card a few years ago.. same money would only buy me a 1gb CF card at the same time.
WOW You read somthing on the internet.. it MUST BE TRUE!!!!
Sony can only really f**k it up for themselves IMO. They have entered a lot of formats late or try to push their own stuff.. the PSP stuff UDM? (or whatever), the Sony Memory Card, the Minidisk, etc.
The only reason I can think of for studios to turn their back on Blu-ray is licencing fees.

That dont happen anymore. People ask for peoples advice. I know a guy whos saught buyers advice for a new tele, he cant decide plasma or LCD, 3 weeks on & hes still none the wiser.
Fact is, the salesman would push whichever he gets the best commission on.
Hes not a very good salesman otherwise.

Game developing dont interest me in that point.... What games have left Sony Exclusiveness? what did they have in the first place? Unless the developers on Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo wage bill, it doesnt make sense for any developer not to develop multiplatform.

Of course it does, consumer programs like watchdog or the gadget show would not exist then and you see it all the time about it, mentioned it becuase like in an old thread was recently on watchdog and the gadget show on how people not getting the right hd tvs etc.

Seems a lot of what your saying is your interest and opinion while I am just re-iterating what has been discussed on the forums and actual fact and well documented stuff.
Me smells sony fanboy :)

More space may = better for data storage but for movies its been proven that HD-DVD is as good as, and in many cases better, than Blu-ray and at the moment the war is for which will be the next movie format.

Ive read & Im old enough to have been around the VHS/Betamax.
Im no Sony Fanboy. Never owned a PS. Owned a PS2 but ditched it when the XBOX came out. Bought a PSP & have used it for less than 10hours.
What I am saying isnt based on opinion, its based on the experience of being there when it happened last time around. Im not talk 80/90s. Im talking late 70s. The format war was affectively over by 1980.
Its just the arguement HD-DVD will win is because of Porn & thats why VHS won. Pornos had nothing to do with it.
