Title: Handheld consoles
Post by: Beaker on April 23, 2006, 00:59:13 AM
Specifically Considering a DS.  Yes i know the PSP has a wider range of games, and you can browse the net, and it has lots of extra things you can plug into it so you can do lots more with it, but i want somthing i can sit back with and just play games without paying out enough money to buy a semi-decent spec 2nd hand laptop.  Just wondering what people who have a DS think of it, and where is a decent place to buy one, 2nd hand would be fine as I just want something i can stick in my pocket and play when ive got half an hour spare.

The DS is class... Im not really into gaming, but the DS won me over...

Pros:
Superb, original games - Electroplankton, Ace Wright, Trauma Centre, Monkey Ball, Tetris, Mario Kart etc.

The download game feature - Vs games from one game cart, i.e. you can play 2-player tetris on two seperate DS with one card.

Dual/Touch screen - makes for some fun games - tetris, monkey ball etc.

Online gaming - Mario kart excels at this.

Dirt cheap.

Cons:
Iffy build quality, but thats no real problem.

All the places are the same for the console in terms of price, but id get the games from Liksang - dirt cheap and i got tetris weeks before it was released in the UK.

The ds lite is prity nifty, longer battery life, brighter screen, bigger pen, by far a better case.

TBH, i think this is the console they were ment to release, the other for me felt rushed to get it out before the psp, i always felt the case proved that.
This is a much better build.

As for limited games, remember the DS can also play all the GBA games. It is awesome, though I would pony up the extra cash and order a DS Lite from Liksang or similar (as I will be doing soon - two player fun with the wife).

Get it, youll never regret it. You can get media players for the DS as well and there is a four Gb HDD being released as well.

Sales wise, the DS is slaying the far too expensive PSP, or Portable Scrap Pile.

(Im only calling it that because I havent got one, but I will when it gets a sensible price)

I frequent a different forum and someone just posted this in the 360 thread there.  I guess the DS is doing "quite" well compared to everyone else!

QuoteEDIT: Also, according to last weeks Japanese sales figures, the 360 is finally selling more than the GameCube over there!

DS Lite: 140,969
DS: 37,204
PS2: 27,549
PSP: 26,340
GBASP: 6,372
GBM: 3,676
Xbox 360: 1,926
GC: 1,080
GBA: 46
Xbox: 30

How much is the ds lite going to be?

Post by: Beaker on April 23, 2006, 19:25:28 PM
its gotta be Ã,£100 or its intruding into the PSP price-range really.  I was only expecting a couple of answers to this, and some riteous indignation from the PSP Fanboys!

Its Ã,£100 on liksang imported. I cant see the UK price being much more.

tbh i much prefer the ds to the psp. who needs movies, music and internet on a handheld console when you have a stereo, dvd player and computer at home??

QuoteSeveral different Japanese organizations keep an accurate running count of hardware sales, so its very easy to tell whos ahead and by how much. Thus far, 6,385,193 DS systems have been sold in Japan (through the week of March 12), including the new -- and perpetually out-of-stock -- DS Lite. Sony, meanwhile, has only moved 3,135,588 units of the PSP. And that gap is only going to increase. Japans market, historically, has always embraced one piece of hardware and skyrocketed it above the competition. So, mark our words: The huge gap there between PS2 and GameCube installed bases is going to be replicated -- but in reverse.

The screen may not be as good on the DS, but are you really gunna be watching that many movies on the move?

1up say "only" 3m psps sold.  That is a very respectable number sold.  Its half what the DS has sold but that has been very successful in its home market.

I have to say, i have watched movies on my psp, probably the most thing i have watched, watch them everytime i take a train journey home.

:D :D :D

I still play more games on my ds though

exactly, id rather sit at home all comfortable on the sofa with a can of cider and some munchies and sit watching a movie, rather than squinting at a small screen in some uncomfortable place with people chatting around me making lots of noise while im trying to watch a movie.

TBH, the PSP is an impressive piece of kit, nice design, fantastic screen, etc etc.  But I am never going to by one.  It doesnt appeal at all.  Ive got a playstation 2 for the sort of games that make up the PSP market.

The least appealing part of the package are the UMD movies, I couldnt watch a decent movie even on long journeys and I cant help but feel its a bit anti social in groups.

I wouldnt mind getting a DS lite when it comes out and I have spare cash.  I was a bit put of the by the whole plastic look that I cant help get bad feelings about the build quality.  I think the Lite looks rather spiffing.

The games avaiable seem to be getting better and better so it is rather more appealing now.

Silly question but does the ds work ok for left handed people? i.e. do you have to use the d-pad and the stylo at the same time?
Title: Re:Handheld consoles

Ive only used it a few times but I dont you ever need to use the stylus and the D-Pad at the same time.

AFAIK there are no games that require you to do that and i cant see anyone producing a game that would...

no, you dont use them at the same time. pretty much all the games are either one or the other.

My girlfriend has it and i dont think you have to play it like that, on some games like Animal Crossing, you can use them together or just use one...
