Title: Has the internet changed your (way of) life?
Post by: Eagle on March 27, 2011, 22:50:34 PM
Leading on from my earlier thread about how long you've been on the internet... has the internet had any impact on you as an individual, the way you look at life, your income or maybe some other way?

Egg here (I think it's the same Egg) suggested once that I start charging for my graphic design.  Have never looked back as I's now feckin' minted.

Economic downturn kinda put-paid to that recently though...

Simple answer is yes. However as I was pretty young I can't say for sure. I used to play games and play with my toys before the internet. Now I spend less time playing and more time on the net. I'm more socially connected, on the net, maybe initially at the cost of real life social connections.

I design and build websites so I would say it is very much integral to my life.
Also considering most of my shopping, banking, billing and even things like doing the Lotto is all online - yep, has changed life a lot.

Ive had internet since my mid-teens. Its obviously changed my life, in what ways I couldnt say.
Some for the better, some for the worse.

I do everything I can online, shopping, banking, paying bills, etc.

What it has changed mostly is the 'downloads' - Wonder how much ive 'saved' in doing so...
Probably well over £1m

Same here, plus the forum community has given me some great friends. I wouldn't be where I am today if not for these internets. I see the internet as just as vital a service as water, gas and electric!

totally agree. I spend loads of money on amiga games & 90% of them was sh*t.
Another argument is enjoyment -I guess having access to so many games, Ive never given some games a chance, despite supposedly being the bollocks.

well it certainly influences my way of life, my life would be very different without it, but since I was only ~15 when I first got online I don't think I can really say it's changed my way of life. I've never known adult life without it.

It has to be said that this couldnt be a more unrepresentative sample set.

It massively changed my life, and more specifically this forum. I joined this forum in about year 10 of school, so 1998 through Saffyre and from there built a few PCs, and got into coding. Now Im a full time developer.

Living where I did I wouldnt have had any access or exposure to any of this if it wasn't for the internet.

ohhh my mother is a good example....

she has "fooks distrophy" (spl)

it's a genetic eye disorder (I've probably got it too) so I googled some info on it for her..... ended up lending her my laptop so she could look for herself... then setting up a pc for her... and she joined some yahoo groups for people with the same thing.... that was about 3 years ago... she spends at least a couple of house a day on the net now emailing people all over the world with the same thing....

I cleaned out her deleted/sent email folders less than 18 months ago.... I did it again a couple of days ago... she had just over 64,000 deleted emails !  (can't remember how many, but it was a good few thousand sent too)

it's made a big difference to her.... she googles for info about that eye thing, googles which books she might like, googles about vegetables she grows in the garden... new recepies, she's been for days out with other people with the same thing to museums etc. etc.  3 years ago she didn't have any idea how to do any of that,

It has definitely changed my life the main thing I find though is that my knowledge is better because of it, if I want to learn something, after a quick google I can get the information I need, if I relied on tv or books for this I'd expect my knowledge would be much less. Downsides are that I don't go out of the house as much as I should, as I often end up engrossed in something on the net, but plus side I speak to friends more often than I would otherwise..
