Title: HDMI splitters?
Post by: DEViANCE on January 03, 2011, 22:39:27 PM
anyone used a hdmi splitter before? do they work ok and not affect the picture quality?

My olde TV only has 1 hdmi port and now Ive mounted it on the wall I want to minimise the cables so dpnt want to run my xbox component cable aswell as the freesat HD box hdmi.

If i can have them both through one cable to the tv without affecting the picture quality that would be great.

I have a matrix and a splitter, they work grande be warned however they tend to make a high pitched squeal :(

I think from your description you mean switcher not splitter though.

I have a switcher, 3x ports and it works fine with no abnormal behaviour. Unlike regular cables though you really do have to pay for quality with switches and splitters or you end up with problems.

I just checked my emails and its one of these:
1 BELKIN-01635 Belkin PureAV HDMI Interface 3-to-1 Video Switch Video/Audio switch - HDMI @ £9.99 = £9.99

I doubt youll find one so cheap though as this was on offer, I think usually they are 3/4x the price. Theres some threads on AV Forums about hdmi switches, its worth glancing over there for a recommendation.

Thats a bargain price there if its any good, see if you can find some reviews of it with proper AV use and you could be laughing.

cheers, Ill give it ago.

Anyone know a good place on the high street that sells 0.5m HDMI or shorter cables. Maplin and ebuyer are expensive for short hdmi cables.

This is what I use.
http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Cables/HDMI/Monitor+Cables/MICRO+3+IN+1+HDMI+AUTO+SWITCH?productId=36180

Problem is though, Arias shipping is extortionate, so it comes out at nearly £30 all in.

cheers everyone got the one i linked from ebuyer and it seems to work perfectly.

It actually hurt me deep inside paying for next day delivery but once I get an idea I dont have the patience to wait.

Here is what I have been working on:

just need some cable tidies and I fancy a 5.1 surround system.

Looks very tidy, I like how youve mounted the screen there, do most wall mounts angle like that?

you can get different types most just mount flat.

The one I got, which was £20 from asda  , had the option of flat or 10degrees.

ahem,

wouldnt you be better off with a 5.1 or 7.1 amp that has 4x HDMI inputs?

I seem to have a slight problem with the scart on the freeview+ box.

when in RGB mode it is very snowy, it is ok in non RGB mode but obviously not as good as a properly working RGB signal.

The scart cable is 5m long and I had to take the plug apart to get it through my holes.

Is the length likely to be the issue or have I damaged the plug?

Cheers

Quite possibly the taking it apart and putting it back together again, maybe somethings not grounded right when youve put it back together again.  Might be worth trying to open it back up and checking everythings connected together securlely.

Good effort on the setup though, looks nice and neat and tidy.

Ive been looking to get myself a new AV receiver as my current one is starting to die (had it 6-7 years so cant complain) and only does SD video so Ive only been using it for sound.  Think Ill end up getting one of these

http://www.richersounds.com/product/av-receivers/sony/strdh510/sony-strdh510

but funds are a little tight at the mo so might just end up with an HDMI splitter and crossing my fingers that the amp stays working.

i would imagine possibly damaged the plug. I use a 10meter scart & dont have a problem.

Eggs right, now youve decided you want a proper surround setup you would be much better off with a decent dedicated amp (Yamaha or Onkyo FTW) rather than having the switcher. A decent one will allow you to plug in all your video/audio sources and output surround to your speakers, and send all video to the TV through the one HDMI.

If youre on a budget look at what Richer sounds have on offer in their surround packages, at a glance either of these would be good for you, the Onkyo amp is less powerful but better specced on paper:

given up with scart, I spent hours soldering a brand new plug on and it is exactly the same, I guess it is just a sh*t cable.

Got it hooked up with good old fasioned RF at the moment and the picture is actually perfect but there is some interference on the sound, a high pitch whine.

Anyway going to bin that box and get Freeview HD + box so that I am 100% HDMI.

AHHH now im having problems with the humax freesat hd box.

It keeps going into standby mode on its own, pissing me off now.

Ive switched powersaver off and auto standby off but it is still doing it.

I wonder if it is because it is going though the hdmi switch it thinks its not getting watched?

or is the box just faulty?

Try the box without plugging it in through the switch and youll have the answer, sounds to me more like a faulty box though.
