Title: Hi-Fis
Post by: Pete on October 23, 2007, 20:24:12 PM
I was looking at this one: here (http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0601951751.1193167264@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccfaddmgeegkkecflgceggdhhmdfhk.0&page=Product&sku=490188)

On paper its pretty good but I had a play with one today and its a bit rubbish, the sound quality is crap and the controls are weird.

Anyone seen a good one for about that price? I need a cool-looking one I can plug my pc into, and maybe a xbox/ps3 later on. Mini, not micro, and not moulded plastic.

you could go to richer sounds and see what you can get cheap

you could try for

cambridge azure 540 AV amp - can be had under £200 and was and still is a great little av amp, and has a radio.

Set of speakers - maybe gales or something like that - theyre a decent enough wee speaker

generic cheapy cd player

You could total in under £300

Floorstanders only work in larger rooms, if youve got a smaller room they sound gash.

Although for the price...

be careful with richer sounds (depending what you want) - they will get you a decent enough basic Hi-Fi for a reasonable price & they do pride themselves on customer service etc.. plus all the store staff are very friendly and happy to help however if you are looking to spend a bit more Id be tempted to have a good look around at other shops and take some advice from the various forums etc.. too.

richer sounds IMO do have a habit of *promoting* certain brands and indeed certain brands are only actually sold within richer sounds stores - there is some sort of business relationship/part ownership thing going on so just be aware that there might be some bias in the advice the sales person is giving you. Having said that Ive bought plenty of stuff from them in the past and probably will carry on doing so in the future.

I dont want seperates, I know theyre good but I want something smaller than what I have at the moment (the old version of this (http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews83716.html))

Also I like the idea of a hdd built in with mp3 stuff. Aint too bothered about DVD but I need a radio.

One of these:

or the Denon equivalent, plus a pair of something like Wharefdale Diamonds.

Bit over budget, but sorted.

For a complete all in one the Onkyo CS-515DAB comes highly recommend, yours for around £300

That with those Jamo speakers clockd was talking about?

The only brand to be aware of at RS is Cambridge Audio.  Its exclusive to RS,  But the quality is still good.  Every other brand you can get elsewhere, usually at a lot more than RS charge.

GFs dad has that Onkyo system with some nice speakers...cant remember the name of them.  But it sounds nice enough.

Cambridge Audio and Jamo are both award winners for some of their respective hardware, so dont be put off by the fact they are sold at RS, some of the kit performs outside its price band.
