Without going into specifics and if keep my graphics card up to the job how long would a spec like this keep going before another major upgrade is needed.
Core 2 2.4GHz
2GB ECC Ram
PCI-E
Yes I do realise all the answers are just going be to be guesses based on current hardware requirement trends.
2-3 years?
The c2ds go like stink. tbh.
12-18months at least Id say.
I thought as much, I just wanted to hear it for myself.
id agree with beaker in saying 2-3 years... processors are about as fast as they will go for now... so in the next 12 months you wont see blistering speed upgrades i dont think (correct me if im wrong though)
the RAM is solid... and i assume upgradeable (spare modules?)
how much for?
The games software has to change too, going from single threaded to multi will take some time. Once its achieved though there should be a noticeable improvement again over the present ones.
Processors wont get much faster but will have more cores put on. You also need high res screens to show off the graphics improvement, which will also be a limiting factor.
I work on near enough three years to obsolete for games on mine. Almost anything else and my three year old 2500+ barton has no problems.
I read that the CPU (even single core ones) isnt so much the bottleneck, its usually the GFX card that limits the fps.
I agree, Id say 2 years that should still be OK. Im on a c2d 6300 and it is quick, no doubt.
Cheers
Tongy

Yes 2 extra slots I believe, if not all 4 taken, its a precision 390.
Id say how much but its through work, theres no link. Its a bargain though, probably cheaper than building it, havent worked it out yet.
Im just trying to decide whether or not to get in on my next pay day and stick a 8800 GT OC in it. I was going to wait and see what amd barcelona was like.
Currently running 64 3500 (2.2Ghz), 1GB, Geforce 4 Ti 4200.

Get yourself a slightly cheaper graphics card for now (Im using an X1950Pro and havent found a game to really tax it yet) and wait until the next batch of DirectX 10 cards are released.
I have a core 2 duo x6800 with an EVGA GTX8800 and i get 5.3 system performance in Vista - WTF is that all about?

M$ have reserved the very high end scores for "Future Processing Power". In other words the 8-Core 10Ghz per core processor they are going to make the requirement for the next version of windows. Along with the Terrabyte of RAM and 512Gb of GFX Memory.
4-5 years, you know you dont really need a computer.

You dont really need a computer yet you have 2 of them in your room. ;)
But I can only use one at once!
