Title: I just bought a GPS device
Post by: mr_roll on September 01, 2007, 17:18:48 PM
A GPS Bluetooth Receiver for my Nokia 6600 with TomTom satnav

Its a great item!

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=130146608735&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=003

Got it today and it got working in a few mins.

The only complaint I have is it slides on my dashboard from one side to another.

So I got some of that Velcro tape and now I can even take it around town with me :D

lol using GPS in a "town" probably okay...

Using GPS as a pedestrian in London... fking impossible.

The buildings are too tall to get any decent signal, then when you have a gap its either when you are crossing a road, or they have planted some trees there cause theres too many bloody buildings around. :D

Though... GPS in general is very cool :)

I downloaded the google maps GPS app and im very impressed with it. Downloads maps on the fly, and stores them. so if like me you use it to see where on earth you are in relation to everything else in a particular area quite often, then you only pay once for what you need :D

Well it and TomTom software navigated my girl friend and I, to the gates of flamingo land. :D

Dont trust it 100% though, sometimes it will lead you into a situation that is either dangerous (IE. driving up a road thats only suitable for 4X4s) or against the law (taking you the wrong way up a one way street.) Otherwise they are great, especially if you are on your own and you already know where you are going...

the amount of times my garmin has done that to me is stupid! had water above the door sills before. most the roads are to small to turn around in to so you either have to push through or reverse all the way back!

More fool you for following it.

Usually when it says "unsuitable for motors" at the start of a "road" its not a road.

My Tomtom hasnt done that yet!

As with any device like this theres definitely a level of common sense required, if youre going to follow it blindly you really cant blame it when you drive over a cliff.

Nothing beats a proper printed map, especially when the gps runs out of power.

I find my gps very useful for finding (almost) exactly where on the map I am, but I wouldnt rely on the gps for full navigation.

Manager came to me at 1pm said "fancy gliding" I naturally went "wtf..." he then came along at 4pm and said "oi... come on! well be late" hopped in his car, drove to usk, got in a glider and flew around a bit :D lol.

Awesomeness! :)
