And my CPU is now running about 10degrees cooler!!
There was a lot of dust in it, from about 2, maybe 3, years of running it nearlly 24/7
reminds me of my days as a sunday techie in a local computer store.
The worst one I ever had was a mechanics computer. It ran the diagnostic thingys in the garage and was chock full of dust and oily grime.
IIRC it came in because it was crashing. I cleaned out the c**p, the CPU temp dropped about 20 degrees and she was happy as larry.
Worse work for me was a 60 a day smoker. Brought her PC to me to fit a modem and see about getting a upgrade of RAM also. I opened up the PC smelt the inside and handed it back. Pure Nicotine. Ive never smelt anything so bad in my life...
I once got an old compaq PII which had been used in McDonalds, must be much fat in the air there !!!
There is actually. If you get a chance go onto the rough of a Mc.Donalds its amusing hahah :)
You can always tell when they are cleaning the grills as well on a cold day huge amount of steam comes flooding out of the Roof :D
I started out working in PC sales store and one day Im asked to service a PC thats crashing and sometimes doesnt boot/
It was being used for calculating sizes & shapes in the cutting room of a carpet warehouse!
What I found inside was enough carpet fibre build-up to stuff a pillow! It wouldnt start sometimes becuase all the fans where totally clogged.
:o

Yes, ive had worse, at my old job we where upgrading pcs to Y2K compliancy for a lot of nightclubs in the area, needless to say they had been running 24/7 mostly, these had an indescribably strong smell of fags, and literally had huge like spiderwebby smoke/dust veins in there, totally covered inside, rank :puke:
A lot of the PCs I end up getting my hands on are warehouse/stores based for an electrial wholesaler. Im amazed by the amount of dust in some of them.
I think the worst offender was an original shuttle that ws being used on the sales counter. It wouldnt boot; I opened it up and it was a solid brick of dust. 10mins with a compressor sorted it out :)
I smoke near my PC, so it does get grimy, but i do clean it every 6 months.
The worst I had was one from the sales counter of a DIY store, it was solid sawdust. They had removed the filters because "They Kept clogging up", i had put the filters in for a reason :\
My PC has a nice look to it but has about as much cooling capabilty as a fire.
I have to keep the side of my case on or put my Tornado fan on.

is that not the generally accepted mode of operation?
Ive done pcs in carpentry/bricklaying workshops, and theyre nasty but the worst ones are store-rooms - rat/mouse droppings.

Ive had the side panel of my case off for a few months now, refitted it just the other day actually. Im lazy though  My PC is thick with dust and dead insects too, but im too lazy to clean it now its got so bad. Ill be upgrading in a few months anyway.

Meant to say "off" not "on" :)
dust ? PAH ! PAH I SAY !
I remember having my computer submerged in oil at -30C when moisture inside the container would condense into water, sink to the bottom of the oil and freeze !
it was pretty nasty finding my HD frozen into a block of ice about an inch thick !
didnt kill it tho :)
itd been running 24/7 so Im guessing wasnt as cold as the rest, and must have had a covering of oil over it between itself and the ice ?
no matter really, i killed it a few months later when I ascendantly put 240v though it :D
