What sort of resolution are you looking at and price?

I actually killed two birds with one stone by getting one of these 32" multi-use LCD TVs

[link removed as its too long ;) - Serious]

Lexsor LC32M5S 32" High Definition LCD TV

Just over 16ms means adequate response for games and the relatively huge size certainly pays off too. If you get sick of playing then you can watch TV on the same screen. Trouble is its relativly expensive compared to a smaller monitor.

I didnt buy it from currys though, some other place had it for just Ã,£670.

If you are looking for bigger than 19" i would recommend looking at either the Viewsonic (a little pricy tbh) or the belinea 102035W which are 20.1" 8ms for under Ã,£330 gets you a nice widescreen with a relatively thin bezel.

no a skeen....

And a low FPS? Are you sure I mean I could give you a TFT with 0FPS. Not promising you would get to see much tho...

www.widescreengamingforum.com if you wanna look up some reviews on flat panels.

NEC 20WGX2 looks good in my book, glossy finish and v low latency.

dell panels are good but more "average" in respose rates

I recently got one of those 24" Dells and i love it to bits!

I think theres a new revision coming out of them in the near future which you should keep an eye out for.

Once you go widescreen youll never go back! I find it really does make such a massive differance. Not only with gaming/movies but general desktop use and browsing aswell.

If you have the cash the Dell 24" screens are the way forwards:
http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna/ProductDetail.aspx?sku=30906&c=uk&category_id=6198&cs=ukdhs1&image_flag=True&l=en&s=dhs&show_summary=False&page=productlisting.aspx

I have the apple 23" cinema screen which is exactly the same except dell put all the electronics inside to let their monitor be a decent high definition tv screen while apple didnt.

Widescreen monitors are so nice.  23-24" show two A4 sheets side by side real size and also show why all design/production software has their control menus in bars at the side of the screen.  Cant recommend the above enough if you have Ã,£700 to splash on a screen.  Theres no visible lag/ghosting during gaming and for day to day use its great.

PS: You probably dont want to go bigger than 24" as 30" and above screens are quite hard to use due to their size.

Ive heard that there is ghosting visible on the dells, 16ms is quite slow indeed!

If you are a serious gamer youll want a viewsonic, 2ms response time(grey to grey), you wont find ghosting in the fastest of games!.

Also you will find that 19" tft is much bigger than a 19" crt, because of the proportion difference and more visible screen surface.

http://www.viewsoniceurope.com/UK/Products/LCDX/VX922.htm

The bigger the screen, the slower the response time, the worse it is for games, so you really need make a comprimise between how much you want a mahoosive screen, and how much you need fast ghost free games.

Getting my new screen on Friday, hopefully.

Will be either the 20" widescreen NEC or the 24" widescreen Dell.

Probably the Dell.

There is a huge market for 19" and above screens.  Can start as low as Ã,£200.  and just goes up from there.

Really depends on your budget, again as said, if you can afford it look towards the Dell Widescreen monitors.

I have a Dell 24" and do a lot of gaming and Ive never experienced ghosting, but it did take me awhile to get used to it especially in FPS with a much larger area to keep track off :D

think it wasnt that theres lots of ghosting, more over that theres a latency between sending it down the cable and it displaying it on some dells, as much as 30-40ms

Dave.

Go with the Dell, its an awesome screen having seen it firsthand. Im aspiring to get one when my 22" CRT becomes too long in the tooth.

Got there to find the NEC was in stock but got the Dell, (and the memory) anyway.

Just got home. Will set it up later.

Too late but nevermind: :)

Another recommendation for Viewsonic here!

Although I have to say - if youre really wanting a monitor for gaming then Id pick a 19". Even if there are some 20" monitors that quote fast response times, Ive never seen one that compares to the best 19" screens sadly.

Also, for gaming, the 19" has the advantage of the lower native resolution. My 20" is a 1600x1200 panel driven by a GF7800GTX and too many modern games force me to run my screen out of native res.

as Ian says, its all about the rest of the hardware.

for the dell 24 inch widescreen the native res is 1920x1200, you would need a SERIOUSLY powerful pc to drive games at that resolution. Once you start getting above 1280x1024 resolution, tfts start getting very expensive.

quoted response times are an indication of the screen generation and not actually related to the actual response speed suprisingly enough.  You wont find many screens with response times even remotely close to the quoted values.

QuoteThe bigger the screen, the slower the response time, the worse it is for games, so you really need make a comprimise between how much you want a mahoosive screen, and how much you need fast ghost free games.

If response times were accurate (i.e. the time it takes for a pixel to update) then it would make no difference how big a screen was.  It would still take that amount of time to refresh wether it was a 1 pixel screen or the size of europe.

Best way to judge is to go on personal opinions.  I cant actually see any ghosting on these screens on movies, tv, football games, world of warcraft, etc although going on what Punkd said its probably apparent on things like counterstrike (never checked tbh).  Short version is - ignore given response times - theyre utterly meaningless.

Just a fyi - I can run most games I play at reasonable settings and 1920*1200 on my old PC without too much trouble (xp3500, 1 gig ram and an ati x800xt).  On this screen size just make sure the screen youre getting can transform images to HDTV resolutions in case you ever want to hook it up to a console etc.

rule of thumb anything over 23" premotes eyestrain.

think about it, its fugging big. having had to work 14 hours straight for the past 4 days with an a4 graphics tablet my eyes and my f**king wrist is killing me.

why cant they give me an a5 pad an a "19 monitor.

depends on how far away you sit from them.

I use a pair of 19" crts at work for coding @ 1600x1200 on each but im not far away from em.

at home im nearly 2 1/2 - 3 feet away from the screen on only run at @1280x1024 on a 21".

About to say the same thing, I have a 32" TFT screen TV/monitor and providing you dont sit too close to it the result is good. Much better for games than general computing though.

They do say w**king will make you blind, obviously no good for the wrists either.

(/snip)

actually re-reading what youve put and ive just spotted one of the reasons there.
If you spend too long at a monitor youll get eye strain regardless, you need short breaks through the day to let your eyes get some exercise (theyre not meant to focus a fixed distance all day).
even if its wandering off to get a coffee.

if your still getting eye and wrist strain, it could be from the way your working. check a health n safety guide for more info.
