Title: IDE -> SATA ghosting?
Post by: White Giant on November 14, 2007, 09:32:46 AM
So Im thinking of getting one of these : http://www.ebuyer.com/product/114117

I cant be bothered to reinstall Windows at the moment, and I have everything setup as I like it. I currently have a 120gb IDE drive with 3 partitions, 1 is Windows/programs, 2nd is games, 3rd is downloaded junk.

Id like to have the 1st and 2nd partition copied over to the SATA drive, and have that as the boot device, and remove the 1st & 2nd partitions on the old IDE drive, basically making it for storage.

How easy would this be, and what program would you suggest I use?

Does the motherboard you have have sata slots but youve just not used them before?

I use Acronis trueimage 11 and its excellent, for cloning you can do it on a boot disk like Hirens boot disk 9 which has loads of tools to repartition and clone drives. The system should see the drive and boot from it without any other modification, only if you were using a sata raid setup would you need to provide the driver. Hope this helps.

Cheers

Spot on, cheers Tongy.

After much deliberation at work today Ive decided to go for a fresh install when I get the drive - Im sure the info will be useful for someone else though!

*edit - To answer the questions, my mobo does have SATA slots, Ive just never used them.
