Title: installing programs to an external hdd
Post by: noob on April 27, 2007, 14:40:49 PM
Ive got a WD passport drive and its great :)

Its got a built in sync program and it allows me to take my stuff with me and pickup emails etc with minimal fuss. Thing is i would also like to install and run programs from it. Can you do this?

I assume its a portable drive? If its USB Im not sure it would be quick enough? Only played with external CD Drives though, so no experience here. Not much point in posting actually.

check out www.portableapps.com

full suite of office apps, including OO.org, Firefox, Thunderbird and GIMP. Installs on a removable drive and runs on any Windows PC you plug it into without needing admin rights or installing anything to the PC.

tha works provided the chipsets are compatible.  Otherwise you get loads of problems.  I have a couple of small 2.5" drives i swap into a caddy for doing it with, but i used W2k because it doesnt complain and demand re-activating.
