Title: Kubuntus getting pretty nice!@
Post by: maximusotter on April 27, 2006, 18:46:40 PM
I didnt install the whole thing, but grabbed kde-base, dependencies, and a few proggies totallying @ 200mb, and have been using them for a couple days.

Being KDE, the defaults are !estupido!, but also, being KDE, its easy to configure via kcontrol. Who needs sounds every time you minimize a window? Urg.

Fast as a bat outta hell if you use K-apps, and ram hungry. 230mb at idle. Yikes.

Removable media is now handled without issue, gtk apps look like theyre family, etc--most of the niggles are gone.

I could actually live with this. Amarok is fun for tunes, and Konqueror has a few fewer quirks than last year, making it a durn nice and speedy web browser. It still chokes on gmail and flickr, though.

Its still more fragile than Gnome due to the incestuous relationship of its proggies, but for 2-300mb on top of a kernel, you get a full featured OS with all the trimmings. Not bad at all. :) Ill leave it installed and boot into it every once and again. :P

Thats a stock Kubuntu wallpaper. ;)

A lot of the nature stuff is wallpapers from Fedora Core 2. Fedora has great art, wish I could find the current rpm to decompress and grab some more shiznit.

See KDE isnt so bad... :P
I prefer Konqueror  to Nautilus (why do the icons have to be so huge!?), plus I find QT libs (http://www.trolltech.com/products/qt/index.html) much easier to develop with over GTK.

Youre right, Arts is rubbish, so I use Dmix instead. :)
