Title: Lan over the net, nice tool and its free
Post by: ERU on July 07, 2006, 16:27:10 PM
Been using this for a while now and figured id share with those of you unaware of its existence

http://www.hamachi.cc/

Its bloody easy to setup (even winstons could manage - /me recalls talking him through various installations of different pieces of software with much anguish) and remarkably easy to run. been using it with my brother and apart from occasionally taking a while to detect the existence of the other computers on the network ive encountered no problems. the major obvious advantage comes with transferring data enabling you to move large files far quicker than conventional means assuming you dont use ftp. also enables you to play games together without having to use third party software.

Lan networks sharing files over the net will suffer due to the upload rates of the people on it, download isnt a problem but 2 people getting from a single upload will be useless

I set it up betwix my two places and it works but I had to untick  " block vulnerable windows services" to see and use my shared files.
How can I use it to share files betwix my puters (not home LAN) and still block vulnerable windows services ?

Any firewall application that runs on the host machine will let you do that bear. The *thing* is that to provide windows file sharing you have to allow access to the other windows services :/

I use Zone Alarm and then manually allow access to certain services as the PCs try to access them.

Well on one the fire wall is in the modem and in one on a linux firewall the (last one a hassle to configure) but I could use windows XP firewall on both machines and block all sevices but filesharing ?

I dont have a definative list of the services it requires but from memory to get Folder Sharing working you need:

File Sharing
NetBOIS
Kerberos

You might also have to expose the RPC service but I am not sure.

I just realized I have many services turned off like remote desktop etc.  as I think XP works better with all not needed
services turned off. As I just going to use Hamachi when I need moving files betwix my puters it is no biggy.

What would be the purpose of this network? Just gaming, I ssume file sharing be against the tekforums ethos?

file sharing is against forum rules, if it doesnt happen on these forums there is nothing we can do about it except plead that you dont pirate stuff !
