Title: Laptop + Juice
Post by: mr_roll on November 06, 2007, 18:54:51 PM
My friend at work has had a little accident with some juice and her laptop.

After letting it dry for a few days, shes turned it back on... Itll load into safe mode but not into Normal mode and will come up with a screen with lines on it, vertical lines I think she said.

What would you guys try? using the recovery CD?

Dead graphics I reckon. Juice leaves horrible sugary gunk everywhere.

If the computer worked fine prior to the juice incident, the problem is hardware, not software so a recovery cd would not really solve anything.

I mean as a last ditch effort... may as well do it, but Id say its a gonna.

if it was a normal pc Id say strip it down and wash it off with warm water.... (has worked for me in the past)

but laptops are a pita :(

Would it have a separate graphics card? Or would it be able to have a new mobo?

Very unlikely. and Yes... if your fingers are like those of a borrowers, and you have a touch much like a feather, and dexterity of jools holland.

For mere mortals... no.

laptops are easy enough to work on.
Just that they are small people are afraid... but once you got it down to the inards, its no different to a pc.

Depending on the model, you may need to rip off a plastic strip holding the kboard down, there may also be screws, sometimes there are little push down lugs at the top of the kboard that you can push on that will release the kboard.
The screen usually connects to a laptop with a cable. Maybe juice has got on that cable & somehow causing the distortion.

Keyboard would prob. be f**ked though because of the juce, all that acid & sugar wont do it much good. Thats about £65 for a new KBoard.

Make & Model of lappy would have helped.....

You really wont know the damage until you get the cover off & see what actually is underneath the Keyboard. Sometimes the memory can only be accessible from taking a kboard out, not common, as most are via a cover plate underneath.

TBH, half decent laptops are cheap as chips these days. Maybe she should use it as an excuse to upgrade. Its worth less than your time and money to fix it IMO.

I had a dell engineer in at work today replacing the mobo on a laptop under waranty.  It looks easy if youve done it about 10 times.

That said I feel sorry for him when he has to deal with the high end or compact laptops, they pack everything in.

Ive tried this with my old Packard Bell.

Didnt manage to remove the keyboard, by the time I gave up trying, only one speaker works, and the left hand ctrl and shift keys do not work. :D

She says its a Compaq Presario C504EU

The image problem has now become intermittent, working in normal mode some times and not others.

you could try giving it a go cleaning the the spill.
She could claim off her household insuarance.

Suprised all the keys on the keyboard still work!
