Title: Linux on PS3
Post by: Walrusbonzo on February 15, 2008, 21:42:21 PM
Got my PS3 today so trying to find out what I can do with it.

Ive got it on the net and installed the latest system software, v2.10.

For now I want to get it playing DivX downloads off an external hard disk, so formatted my 250GB in FAT32.

Later Ill be putting Yellow Dog Linux on it and setting it up for some music playback also.  Will be streaming lossless Wavpack files off my Windows PC.

Fingers crossed I can work it all out.

Anyone else got a PS3 and do home entertainment type stuff with it?

Dont think Ill be using it for games.

Sorry, I use TVersity [free] on my PC to stream the stuff but you can just enable media sharing within windows or media player, and it does the same thing, just a bit more basic!

The PS3 is just a standard setup, wireless connection to the network, works a charm :) Very good for viewing photos too.

this is the reason why I might get one of these myself

I have a few ideas for doing some rather processor intensive tasks on it, Id like a blue ray player at some point and I want to be able to play GTA4

Xbox is cheaper (elite less so) but I reckon saving on the need to buy an additional HD player and being able to play with linux/use it as a media center would be very tempting as Im not too fussed about the range of games

the only reason Id go for an x-box is if (as has been pointed out in another thread) the quality of GTA 4 is significantly superior on the 360

I dont see the point in going Linux route for Media Centre use, the powerpc main cpu is not beefy enough and currently the video is not accelerated by the nvidia gfx chip.  IMO youre better playing video via the built-in player and stream them.  OK, it doesnt play mkv/ogm or any of your lossless codecs but for most people it is sufficient.

Agreed, I really dont see the point of installing another OS onto the PS3 to make it a media centre.  Every update has borught more functionality and reliability.  The addition of DiVX support being a big one however you are limited to 2GB (or 4) files at a time iirc.

I can quite easily just come along with a flash pen, and away I go.  No messing around, its quite a capable as a media centre, local or network storage.

What are the source files not to be doing any transcoding?  .mp4? or mkv?

MKV.  Using MKV2VOB to demux and remux.  Play fine then in all their HD H264 AC3 glory :)
