Im hunting around to buy myself a new lappy, and possibly buy herself one as well if I choose not to get her a MacBook (Ignore the other thread, was talking the other day and shes decided she doesnt wnat one because the screen is too small). So then, ive spend a couple of days running around looking at what is available.
So then, looking at this :: http://www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/product.do?sku=425435
Any thoughts? Seems reasonably well specced out, and its not ugly.
Im also considering :: http://www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/product.do?sku=428620
For myself, yes i know its a Turion not Core 2 Duo, but it seems to be about the spec im looking for otherwise.
Thoughs? Deal Beaters? Im looking to buy two from the same place if i take this route, and im only after a 2nd PC for myself.
Basically, Not Celeron/Sempron, minimum of 1Gb RAM, would prefer a 14.1" screen for myself, and branded. None of this EI Systems/Advent stuff.
My lappy is my main computer and I have a Dell and its fantastic.
Id go with the Acer tbh.
Cheers
Tongy
missing out on dual cores is the worst thing you could possibly do !

Both of them are dual cores, but I like the look of the HP. For the money its a "Good Enough" for what im going to use it for.
Im probably after 2 machines, one for herself and one for myself. I just want something a bit more portable than my 15" Acer 1672. Its a decent enough laptop, but its both heavy and old now. Its starting to feel its age, and the screen is starting to look a bit dim now since one of the lights in it died. I was looking at a little 14.1" single core turion on ebuyer for £340, but figured Im best off with duals even for the lappy. Also, if im buying 2 machines i need to amke sure mine and the GFs are different models at least, if not different makes.
Personally, Id look at Lenovo, HP, Toshiba and Dell.
As much as I like Acer, getting parts from them is a nightmare, and the build quality is pretty poor.

for £400 a pop for the machines Im looking at Celeron or Turions in those brands. Plus, ive given up trying to get parts for laptops anyway, ill just take out extended cover then dump the lappy once it breaks out of warranty.
heh, Comet are being c***s. I wandered in and asked about one of the Acer machines, and a nice little HP they had in with a decent spec (and a 13" screen). They had them in, i figured since i was down there a new TV might also be in order, and they had a nice Sammy 28" in stock. I pointed out what i wanted and asked what the best deal was. They wont give me a penny off, so ive walked and ill mail order the stuff from somewhere. The guy was stood there looking stunned when i told him not to bother. Im not spending £1700 and not getting something knocked off, or something for free. They wouldnt even give me a stand for the TV!
Good work fella but a little advice for the future; ask to speak to their manager when they say that they cannot do a deal. 9/10 the manager will offer you something, whether its any good or not though is another matter :)

they had done, and he said no deals. Nevermind, just picked up one of the HP Turions listed above from staples, for £30 less than Comet, and ive got a Fujitsu again from staples with a 5300 and similar spec (120Gb HDD rather than 160) for £330. The Fuji has been opened, but the plastic bag the lappy was in was still sealed. Ive got the HP on my desk at work at the moment, and it actually seems pretty swift.
