Head to add/remove programs and tick "show hot fixes" and then just uninstall a crap load of them until you can use your computer again... then... Reinstall them one by one.

Cause it tends to be useless.

1.) Any viruses you have tend to infect the files.
2.) Sure it reverts the system to a previous state, but that includes any bugfixes or patches or drivers youve used on any hardware, so you may find that hardware and software you have installed no longer works correctly.
3.) Its normally better to just to a reinstall of a backup or ghost image. As opposed to relying on system restore.
4.) It WHORES hard drive space.

I tend to just wipe windows and reinstall when an error occurs. Just no point fuss farting around. reinstall get rid of the crap and voila.
