Title: Modem setup query
Post by: dearleuk on July 14, 2013, 12:43:49 PM
Hello

I'm after a bit of advice please.

I want to replace my wifi ASDL router. I bought the router, but didn't realise that there was no modem built in, but it's a really nice router and does everything we want.

I can buy a ASDL MOdem for £10, but I think the web interface for the modem and router are the same i.e 192.18.1.1 and I'm not sure the address can be changed.

Googling suggests changeing the subnet mask. Now I know most home subnet masks are 255.255 etc, but after that I'm completely in the dark. I thought all machines on the network had to have the same sub address or they wouldn't SEE each other?

Anyone done this, or is this the wrong approach?

Thanks

before you plug in the modem, connect to the router interface and you should be able to change it's IP address to something different ;)

you'll probably also have to tell it the IP address of the modem etc...

then plug them both in, and it'll work fine :-)
(maybe a few other options need changing when you log in...)

which router is it ?

IP address looks odd (or were those just numbers off the top of your head?)  it should start 192.168.1.XXX for pretty much anything for home use :-)

Yeh, the ip address was typo

That's great, thanks for the advice
