Title: My hands and feet are raw!
Post by: soopahfly on March 11, 2012, 09:17:34 AM
Spent most of yesterday up a ladder with my dad sending Cat6 and RG6 cables into my loft, back bedroom, cellar, kitchen and lounge.

Forgot that Cat6 cable has that plastic bit running through the middle of it.  Right pain to get connectors on there.
Then some bright spark online suggests that dipping the braid on the RG6 cables in vaseline will make it easier to screw the F-Plugs on.
Yeah right.  My finger tips are red raw.

Eitherway, I've now discovered that after having a 1meter wide wasps nest removed, another the size of your fist containing the queen, another set of buggers have set up home in my crawl space.
I'm terrified of the things, so I'm going to try and get some of that foaming spray and blast it from a distance, then try and treat the wood to stop them coming back.

Spraying all of the wood in there with contact insecticide could help. Most of all you need to seal any holes that they are getting in through, that can be a difficult task.

You didn't believe the vaseline story, did you? ???

f connectors are a pain. I got a crimp tool & the proper f connectors. Makes it much easier.
Hope youve run shotgun cable.. always handy spares & saves having to do the job again.

Nah, didn't bother with shotgun cable.  I got 100m of standard stuff for £14.99 from my local independant electrical shop.  Shotgun was considerably more.
Still got about 50m left.

I just used screw on's and self amal tape to seal.

Me and my mate were sat outside on the decking enjoying the sun today and he spotted a mahoosive wasp fly out of my roof and down onto the decking.
Then promptly under his foot :D

Job done.

Shotgun cable - two rg6 cables within one cable
Rg6 - satellite grade coax cable
F connectors - those screw type cables that you use on satellite tv/virgin.

Crimps are definitely best. As for shotgun cable, may aswell just run another and then you have scope for a lot more.

I used the airing cupboard in my new house as an AV cupboard. Got everything going there from my TV and will eventually run cat6 throughout the house so I can distribute HDMI, internet, video and sound over it all. Can get it from work for free so easier to use that compared with other cable.

Latest cat 6 is gold. You can get great faceplates with your network socket as well as hdmi and you can run more then one cable into them as well.

Why gold?

It's used for transmitting a digital signal, with in built error correction and re-transmission :|

Or do you mean that it's gold as in "awesome/spiffing/great!"? :D
