Ive had my PS3 since Christmas eve, and here is my rundown so far.
Installing games gets on my tits, and why is the PSN the slowest thing in the world for downloading game updates?
I set it up on christmas day and it was 45 minutes before I got to play anything.
The lack of noise is nice, seems well built enough apart from the controllers but thats always been my PS issue.
They just feel like chocolate box plastic. Wireless is easy enough to set up but why would anyone want to use it is beyond me, its range is pants.
The graphics dont look massively different to my 360 despite the benefits of uncompressed textures, and for most fast paced things the 360 still seems to just keep the edge.
I dont think were likely to see an update from either company for MKV playback, and every time someone gains access to the RSX in linux making XBMC possible...Sony patch it.
To coin a phrase Ive heard before somewhere, Sony have the reciepi for the best cottage pie in the world. Then make it with dog meat.
Its silent and would be absolutely perfect as a proper media player. But they wont do it.
Lets see what this year brings, the PS3 is not selling as many as they hoped. Im betting it hasnt been hacked yet for copied games, maybe a fully featured media centre would change that?
And why do you have to press X to confirm that you wont turn it off when the HDD indicators flashing?
I bought one around xmas
Ball of dung. Gave it to my brother.

Nice of you.
Here the same about the PS3 by a lot of Gamers who are not necessarily Sony Fans. I think we will find game sales Sony is way down compared to the others, they have not done any deals or special bundles anywhere to get them sold.

Not surprising, try downloading any of the Sony trials and its the same issue, i left my pc on all night and managed to download 50% of one game.
For some odd reason they seem to limit the download speed, and with the launcher you cant see how fast your getting it.
But then SOE doesnt have the greatest reputation :P

Galaxies they would only patch once a month on the norm even with big bugs in the game and every single download for that game was terrible and slow.
Sony can not do online, They were slow and off the ball with online console gaming and while they are adding the stuff they should have in the modern gaming world and online world they are not doing it in good ways. MS are not perfect either but they are on to it, Nintendo who famously said that online gaming on consoles would not take off were also slow to take on things and still learning and off the ball in a number of aspects but their efforts are getting there and some nice things there. I do not hate Sony but they are making a mess in several areas.
My girlfriend works in marketing for Playstation, she goes to all the stores to sort advertising and marketing for Sony gaming products, Her brother also worked for Sony Playstation but recently was sacked as they consolidate staff combining roles into one.
I was going to respond with a link but imo it deserved its very own thread :P
i get zero problems with download speed - maybe make sure you got the right ports, etc. open
i know everytime i turn the ps on it seems to want to update the game etc, so i can see that being a slight pain in the bum
but its no slower than downloading the file on my pc would be.
never had any issues with range on my controllers either and i have a pretty long living room, they dont even need direct sight of the ps
am a bit miffed the media side of the system as i was sold the idea of using it as my media player etc.
ah well, just waiting for my 500gb sata rive to appear as santa never got me it for christmas!
still loving mine, although PS Home is a bit rubbish
Ant
I ONLY use my as a media centre, and for that very reason I think its awesome.
Flogged the Wii and picked up a PS3 and Im loving it. This actually sees a lot of use, unlike the Wii that would only really get played by friends if we had a party or people around. I think Ive already got 10 or so games which is a record on any console for me, and its the first thing to ever break me away from the PC for quite a few games.
Gents, if you are using wireless as your connection method try switching to wired as it seems there are issues with using wireless, ie its painfully slow :gag:
2 ps3s in the house, mines on wireless, other isnt and mine is so much slower :gag:
edit, just to add irritatingly stuff like my laptop runs at full speed on exactly the same wireless, in exactly the same room!
I got my ps3 back just before xmas and havent been off it since, GTAIV online and everybodys golf world tour are getting hammered
yeah my ps is wired even though i use the laptop wireless with no probs.
my main pc is wired also.
walrus, may need to pic your brains about setting up the media centre as i am just about to head down to swap out my 40gb drive for a 500gb one!
wish me luck on backing up my saved game data!!
Just found out that the new Divx 7 standard supports MKV.
Possibly if the PS3 upgrades to support Divx 7 from its current 6, then we may be in business.

Absolutely! I need somewhere to dump my hd rips
Most MKVs are just H.264 video and Dolby Digital(AC3) audio.
If so, use MKV2VOB (http://www.mkv2vob.com), it just changes the container format, PS3 plays it fine without any transcoding :)
For those wanting to setup their PC as a media server, I find TVersity (http://tversity.com/) very easy to use and rarely fails on me.
Ive tried TVersity and it didnt work well. It would crash while watching something. Ive had to stick with Mediaplayer as my sharing app, with the reg hack to allow network shares to be streamed.
People have had good experience with tversity, Im not one of them :(
Yeah, its not perfect, but generally, very reliable for me.
What version did you try? There have been lots of updates recently.

It wouldnt suprise me, the system has changed an awfull lot since release, updates come thick and fast. DivX support has been one of my favourites. Taking a file on flash pen and playing it on your tv has never been easier.

It has been a while since I last tried it but MP11 has worked so Ive been pretty happy with it so far.
