Title: Need some help with RAM
Post by: bytejunkie on June 23, 2014, 13:12:27 PM
esteemed geeks of tekforums... can someone help me with this RAM.

The two sticks pictured are for my test lab server, dell R210. two pairs of two gig sticks.

heres the problem.

they both work fine in the server. but put all four in together and it fails to boot.

so ive worked out that the RAM that goes in needs to be 2Rx8, dual rank, 8 chips. its also ECC. I can tell its different timeings, but is the motherboard not clever enough to understand that? I've updated bios and firmware where possible.

I actually need to get this server to 16GB so if anyone has 16GB 4x4 of ram they want to sell... but thats for a different thread.

They have 9 chips ( EEC is always 8 + 1)
Difference I can see is the top pair are Registered (10600R R= registered) & the bottom are not (10600E = EEC)
Itused to be registered ram will not work with non registered ram if the motherboard supports registered ram.
If the motherboard does not support registered ram, then they should run happily.
Have you tried a pair in 1&3 with the other in 2&4?

ive tried them all in the same time, but might not have had the pairs the right way around.
I showed the pic to a colleague after posting and he spotted the same thing as you straight away.

so i need to look at it again tonight with a view to proving it takes registered and then ordering some 4GB sticks of registered.
