Hey all,
Been thinking about this for some time now.
I have apple and PC set ups at home, I have an apple tv, xbox and ps3 around different locations in the house as well as a roku 2.
Currently all my movies are stored on my PC and that has to be on to view movies on devices. MKV can run to the PS3 but have to run the PS3 server.
I got a great server and Ipad app to play movies off that on my ipad. Yep, forgot to mention ipads as well.
Hoping there is something out there like a NAS with media support to have a good size storage, can be a hard linked into the network, possible to have wifi and can have good size storage and be able support playing to devices.
Not got much of an idea, any thoughts?
Anyone asking for NAS I find it hard not to just recommend one of the HP Microservers (again). They are small, cost nothing to run 24/7 (someone on AVforums caculated one with 4 disks would cost 10-20p a day in electricity) are £120 with the £100 cashback, it's a full computer so you can do what you want with it and can stick up to 6 disks in there. Sold.
If you need it to transcode for PS3 then you'll struggle with anything other than a PC, some NAS boxes will do it but it will be a lot of faff.
If you dont need transcoding there are plenty of dual bay NAS drives, but like Leon says, for the price, microservers are unbeatable. Plenty of power, total flexibility and 4 bays for the price of a 2 bay NAS enclosure.
Qnap might do it
Another one for HP Microserver, it's been faultless and can be as multipurpose as you need it to be!
