Title: New 80-core processor
Post by: Cheule on February 12, 2007, 17:47:51 PM
I want one of these (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6354225.stm) :) Shame its only a proof of concept at the moment, but 62 watts is less than my 3500+ Venice I think

thats very cool indeed, and probably is the future but I suspect its fairly distant future for the moment. To make use of that many cores is going to take a massive shift in programing and certain things are just never going to need that much parallelism.

Still its cool that they can turn the cores on and off, so if youre only running 5 threads I guess it would just turn off all but 5 cores.

The article doesnt say but I wonder if its running on 32nm test silicon? I cant see how they can make an 80-core chip in a space no bigger than todays Quads.

multi-level processors?  They dropped the idea off a few years ba because of signal bleed, but with modern production methods they might pull it off.
