Ive ordered an X2 4200 to upgrade from my 3200. Will I need to upgrade the cooler? Its currently a Stock AMD cooler
depends which one they send. Im running my 6000+ on the stock cooler, but i think they give out a different one with the lower end gear.
I would go off your temps, if you feel its too high then upgrade, if youre happy then stay with the stock. Thermal protection should protect you as long as you dont stress the cpu too much if its hot.
Ill keep an eye on it when it comes. When the 3200 was new it was top of the line! So hopefully the cooler will be up to the job.
Incidentally, Whats a used 3200 939 worth these days?
Go off stability.... I dont really give a jacks ass for temperatures anymore. My CPU often hits 70C when both cores load up, but its stable, thats all that matters. :)
When i had my old 3000+ (Skt 754) i used this Akasa cooler and after a few months it just got crap, made the temps too high so i replaced it with the stock cooler that came with the CPU, saw temps around 40C on it (with Akasa cooler temps were usually 50C) untill i sold the rig, now iv got my new rig with a 3700+ (Skt 939) i originally had a stock cooler on that and it ran at 34C on idle and 38C on high load usually, now iv recently upgraded to my Zalman CNPS9500 and now seing temps at 30C on high load :-) i would highly recommend that Cooler!

A couple of days ago I gave my PC its first clean out since I built it about 16 months ago.
Dust was totally covering the heatsink fins. Cleared it all off and now my load temps are a good 10C+ lower :D
New chip is in, and doesnt seem to get above 50degs on the stock cooler, and the thermal compound hasnt settled yet :)
Couldnt find my stash of arctic silver, so RS Heat Sink Compound Plus will do the job.
